Description
The Vought F-8 "Crusader" and Mikoyan-Gurevich Mig-17F were frequent adversaries during the Vietnam conflict. Both able aircraft had their special capabilities. The elegant F-8 had power, speed, and agility; but the bulkier, more utilitarian looking Mig-17 had much better low speed turn performance. Both were armed with guns as a primary weapon, and indeed, the Crusader has been often called "the last gunfighter" among American fighters.
The F-8 eventually lost out to the F-4 Phantom. The F-8 was designed primarily as a air to air platform and the Air Force was more and more enamored with multi-role platforms. The Mig-17 was the primary interceptor/fighter of the fledgling Vienam People's Air Force. It was originally designed to intercept straight and level flying bombers, but due to its excellent turning capability, was often successful against higher powered, more sophisticated adversaries. More than 10,000 units were produced. Both aircraft are classics!
Vought F-8 "Crusader" model by Pedro Caparros. This is another of his most excellent models generously offered for free at sharecg.
Mig-17F is also by Pedro and available at the same location. (Also an excellent model!) Both models have had a bit of texture adjustments.
Pilots are M4 and m3 figures with various bits and pieces put together for gear.
Figures set up in PoserPro; composed, lighting, some tex adustment and effects, and rendered in Vue6Infinite; finished in PS Cs3

Nicely done once again, and the planes are in realistic positions too. The F-8 was well-liked by pilots in spite of its horrible landing characteristics, as it was a capable air to air fighter and fun to fly. It wasn't fun to land one on a carrier though, and the type had a lot of accidents doing that.

Great picture with action. I like that. Yeah, the Crusader was a formidable fighter. AFAIK it scored the most air-air victories in Vietnam. They had higher success with Sidewinder because they handled them like shooting with the gun.
