Description

Hi guys, This years Legends once more (2018), sun, aircraft on finals and in focus... Here, North American P-51 D-25 Mustang, owned by the Norwegian Spitfire Foundation lands right in front of me. Everyone of course, knows the story of the aircraft that was good low down until some bright spark at RR said 'why not try a Merlin'. The rest is Legend. Whats not so well known is unless you read lots (and I know some of you do), is that most including this, US Aircraft were flown before Pearl Harbor in action by the RAF. Advise for example on the B-17 resulted in the much up-gunned B-17F. (The RAF used all Mk's as Electronic Warfare Aircraft). Hudson's flew during the Dunkirk evacuation, and Wildcat shot don the first enemy aircraft during WW2. Rob

True the first flight of the P51 mustang was in October 1940. It was designed for the British Purchasing Commission. Pearl Harbor was Dec 1941. The Japanize Zero was sort of an American design. It used a lot of the design elements of the H1 designed by Howard Hughes. - Bob

The early ones had an Allison which would show as a hood scoop for the downdraft carburetor different than the updraft SU on a Rolls. The canopy would also have had a sheet metal razor back and no bubble canopy. Now for Spitfires with ADI Strombergs on their Rolls I have no idea once the SU is not present. Did any very late P-51's have ADI Strombergs?
