Description
Katernin lead them toward a large edifice set back from the center of the courtyard, passing through the surrounding structure they reached an open interior terrace that contained a large dais upon which stood a huge stone throne. As they walked, she addressed Coran, all but ignoring the others; “I see you no longer wear the Moonmaiden’s symbol… have you fallen from your faith?”
“No… but Tessele revealed that I bear a blessing from Sune… an enticement to honor her as she feels neglected by the monks of the Sun Soul. So, I have chosen to revere both Sune and Selune as patrons. Therefore, I don’t feel right wearing either’s symbol without the other’s… so I choose to wear neither,” he explained.
“So, what does this blessing grant you?” she inquired in a skeptical tone, glancing dismissively toward the gorgeous red-headed cleric.
“It draws beautiful woman to me, but apparently leaves me unable to refuse their needs. Which is why I’m here in… somewhere I had never wanted to return to,” he admitted, glancing at Zharilee with a sly smirk and a wink.
Kneeling before the great throne, a bald man wearing a dark cloak rose and turned to face them as they approached. Coran recognized him as Grigor Shemov, who had been one of the head priest’s apostles the last time he was there… apparently he had taken over the senior role.
“Guests… how surprising,” Grigor greeted them in an unwelcoming growl, “and two of whom have visited us before. What could possibly bring you back to our temple?”
“They’re here to ask for our aid in recovering a moonblade left in the moon elf’s ancestral estate when the city fell,” Katernin replied for them. “She apparently has maps to lead them to the estate and the catacombs where their vaults are, and has offered us a share of what was left behind when her family fled. But they have only four days to retrieve the sword because she must perform a ritual to claim it at first light on the Autumn Equinox. I believe that the opportunity to gain any magic or weapon that could help defend the temple is worth the risk… and I’m willing to lead a small group of our warriors to support them.”
“So, you think this obviously poorly conceived venture is worth risking our men’s lives… knowing how few we have to defend us,” he snarled, clearly not in favor of supporting them.
“It isn’t any riskier than the patrols we send into the ruins to rescue the fools who think they can loot the city at will?” she argued. “At least we have a chance to recover magic and weapons that could strengthen our defenses with them.”
Eyeing the companions with open contempt, he seemed to consider her point for several minutes before replying with a heavy sigh; “Very well… you may take three men… if you can find three who will volunteer. But I expect you back in no more than five days… and with ample treasure to justify the effort.”
Nodding her head in acceptance, she herded the companions back into the temple building, guiding them down a side passage that lead to a large common room filled with long tables which could accommodate fifty or sixty people, but was only occupied by a dozen men and women, all gathered at one table dinning together. Getting bowls of a thick dark stew themselves from the cauldron in the large hearth to one side, the companions joined the others. Katernin introduced them, but Coran and Roryn recognized a few of the warriors from their pervious visit.
“We’re looking for three volunteers to join a mission to recover an artifact from the Morningstar estate… any takers?” Katernin asked the assembled warriors, immediately having all of them respond positively, and selecting three men who looked to be the strongest amongst them.
