Description

I tried to get a shot of the very stern for the name and homeport but we ran out of pier. So this is our shot of the after end of the ship. SAVANNAH had limited passenger accommodation and most of the passenger amenities are in the after midships section which we have a good view of here. During the tour of the engineering facilities, including an interior look at the reactor, we learned that the screw had been removed. It used to be stowed on the after cargo section but someone mentioned it being on the pier. Look as I did, no screw in sight. (OK, I do not believe I just wrote that, but ...) obviously it's been relocated or hidden really well. ISTR that the after cargo holds were particularly troublesome. Thus I think it's worth pointing out that this was really a "proof of concept" vessel. It was not intended to be a commercial success but a showcase of US nuclear engineering for non-military purposes. If the idea took off, this would have been a grand training ground and test platform for other ideas. However, jets were replacing cruise ships as THE way to cross the pond and crude oil was probably around $3 per barrel. Nukes were in their infancy and the price of operating was correspondingly high. (There were other money-related issues as well.) Would the idea work today? Mmmmm. Lots of reasons to do it and lots of reasons to not do it. Enjoy; thanks for viewing. As I said earlier, this is a decrepit part of Baltimore harbor. Check out the surroundings.

That's something typical, We need visitors but let us set it where they would be afraid to come but cheap for us to berth. At least the ship looks good. Thanks for sharing.
