Description

We have just boarded SAVANNAH via the doorway out of sight in the upper left and as one of the young visitors said: this looks more like a building than a ship. OK, a good description of this area. The floor seems to have a modernistic paddle-wheel design running around the 1960's orange couch and that refers back to the SS SAVANNAH. (More details on that ship here: http://www.robinsonlibrary.com/naval/architecture/steamships/savannah.htm) Note the ashtray mounted on the bulkhead near the entryway. These were scattered throughout the ship and some visitors had NO IDEA what they were or could be used for. (Seriously.) The doorway to the right of the buttkit (ashtray) is the entry to a passageway which leads to the main deck by the cargo hatches. The doorway to the right of that is a staircase (and an elevator -- not working) to the dining room just below us and to the upper decks which I believe are where the passenger staterooms are. I was pretty pooped after having climbed more ladders than I can imagine on two ships, so I did not venture into the passenger cabin deck. Next trip. Enjoy; thanks for viewing. However, I do have the strength to climb down a deck or two...
