Description

Another reason I stick with Poser.... πŸ˜‰ OK - when I try to apply a shader to *anything* in DAZ, it asks if I want to save the file before closing. HUH?? I don't wanna close, ya nut! I just want to apply one of these fancy-dancy shaders to whatever I'm working on. I click 'NO' then DAZ tells me the shader doesn't exist - even though it can see the shader in both the content and surfaces tab. The flyout when I hover the mouse over the shader shows the path to it. I can navigate to it in Windows. But DAZ refuses to believe it's there. WTF? Any of you DAZZling DAZ experts out there have any ideas? Delete and reinstall? Sacrifice a small mammal? Give it a power wash at the local car wash? Help save my remaining 6 brain cells if you can. A mind is a terrible thing to waste.... πŸ€”πŸ˜œπŸ˜’

Hey Rod, I'm not sure you realize that before you can apply an IRAY Shader Preset to an object that you have to select the object in the view plane AND select it in the surfaces tab and then apply the Uber Base shader to the object. Once that happens you should see no changes on the screen but you will notice significant changes in the surfaces tab. NOW you can apply any of the IRAY shaders in your library. I know you are a Poser kind of guy and you might have been working with the 3Dlight surfaces. You said you were migrating to the DAZ 4.11 Beta from a DAZ 3.x possibly? I'm just throwing this out there for you to chew on without me seeing exactly what you are doing! If you can follow this and it doesn't work, you need to talk to somebody above my pay scale. Good luck.

Dave

The DAZ Uber shaders normally come with DS4.x itself. So possibly an uninstall & reinstall of DS4.x would be the first (or last) resort.

Did you say this was a Beta version? If so, that may be a glitch Daz needs to know about.

Hi Rod, found the exact problem in a DAZ forum. Maybe that'll help.

when I go to apply a shader to an object I make sure that I've selected the object and then go to the surface tab and make sure that the object is selected there. then I apply the shader.

Have the same problem, what i do is, i select: show asset in product folder. When it shows me the product, then merge it into the scene and then it works. And for other products there no problem.

Right-clicking the shader then clicking 'merge into scene' works fine! I can go with that - thanks for the tip! πŸ‘πŸ˜

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

RodS

2:33PM | Fri, 18 January 2019

Yep. Didn't make any difference... I've not tried turning it off and leaving it off yet.... That might work! πŸ˜†πŸ€£πŸ˜πŸ˜‚

Hi RodS, I canΒ΄t explain, why it happens, I just can tell: yes, I encountered this myself! The content seem to be there - but somehow isnΒ΄t. Must be an issue with DAZΒ΄s content management system/cloud. I overcame it by uninstalling and deleting the CMS entry and re-installed it - then it did work. Hopefully helpful.

Daz is like a Russian nested doll (matryoshka)...it seems that one has to go through so much crap to get to that one little thing one wants...For me, Poser is the better proggie--easier, more elegant, and the material room is my little heaven Looking forward to P12. But, do keep plugging along with DS--it does produce lovely renders.

Oh Good!!
You got help!!
I always start with sacrificing a chicken, but With all the Great BBQ places in KC, maybe you should try some sacrificial pulled pork!

Yes I would say uninstall then install again, sometimes it looses the path. Also some things require you to actual click on the object in the surface tab first. Think you got it now, but just in case

Normally merge is for merging two scene - another method is to drag the shader icon to the object. Also you may want to go through this helpful tutorial thinkdrawart
Hope that helps Good Luck!

Looks like your 6 remaining brain cells are in safe company! Next, how will the rendered figures turn out?

(I just wanted to say: I haven't got a clue!!!!! I haven't got a cuh-luuuuue, lol!!! I'd love to give some sage advice, but I don't know a thing about this stuff. However, from your next upload, I see that you got great responses, and I'm very happy. I entered 3D galleries late in my stay here; and I've been struck, over and over, at how supportive you all are of each other, and how loyal. Even with the defections from RR, you all still get lots of responses ((look at me and helle, both here from before 2010: we get maybe 10 now)); and so many of the 3D responses are so heartfelt. I'm glad you got good replies to this. Well I mean you give such caring responses, you certainly deserve it....Your questions and images are fascinating, but to a non 3D person, I can only say, kudos for getting good replies, and I'm glad that they helped your already masterful art.)

To apply any material, I click the surface icon and then click the item I wish to apply it to. I've had some instances where something couldn't be found and to be honest I went to Windows Explorer and searched lol. Once I found it there I went back to DS and easily directed it to the correct location. (I don't have a lot of patience with DS). Regarding the save and close warning, I've seen this when DS thinks I'm loading a new scene. I don't know why so I cancel. Good Luck!

I'm a bit late to this party, but K.Black up there has the answer for you I think. That's one I've never seen, and I have the Iray Uber shaders installed in two separate places from different DS installs. If you are running the beta, it's a beta glitch I'd say. If that's regular DS 4.10 that is an unusuall error. You may need to reinstall it. The metadata is all there, but DS cannot seem to find the content.

RodS

Actually, the beta is working perfectly (on a different machine), at least so far.

Rod, sometime if the paths are missing, go to the product view in the smart library and right click the product and select uninstall. Then you can reinstall. Sometimes I get missing files, I do the uninstall and reinstall to get the content to install properly.
