A Vought OS2U "Kingfisher" observation aircraft flies security patrol over a gathering merchant ship convoy during the Battle of the Atlantic. The Kingfisher was a small catapult-launched, single engine, observation plane operated by the US Navy, United States Marine Corps, the United States Coast Guard, the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy, the Soviet Navy, and the Royal Australian Air Force. It was widely used on US Navy battleships, heavy and light cruisers as observation platforms and air-sea rescue planes. Approximately 1,519 of the aircraft were built serving from the first flight in March of 1938 until 1944 with the introduction the Curtiss SC SeaHawk. The Kingfisher was armed with two 30 caliber machine guns, one in the front of the plane and one manned in the rear by the observer. The aircraft could also be fitted with two 100 pound bombs or two 325 pound depth charges which came in handy during convoy escort duty or shore bombardment sorties. Many a downed aviator and shipwrecked sailor thanked their lucky stars at the sight of this mini bird!
