i've seen a number of solo pieces from you with a single model who dominates your image, and this is yet another w/ the same sense of taste, mystery, beauty, complexity, invitation--in this case mixed with seduction and even guardedness---always a wonderful sense of style, and your always thoughtful backgrounds. Here you have what appears to be a green land of distant villages and hills, incl a village on a hill on the left...a mysterious background, like she's coming to us from a timeless land of folklore. And ethnically she's mysterious too: a real mix of black and white, middle eastern and african, mediterranean maybe even latin...and you've clothed her in a simple dress---it actually looks a bit like a bathing suit, but could also be a nightgown or neglige; whatever it is, it's simple and suggestive, and classily done...with a single red rose and green leaves lit by your dappled light. She's also lit with dappled/varying light, adding to her mystery---a mystery accentuated by feline eyes and those dark (crimson) lips. Her hair is like a universe, from which she radiates a subtle set of halos (the lightly visible circles radiating around her head)...with a lone tattoo which communicates something passionate. (I think it's dragons or snakes.) I love that you give all the background detail to a small swath on the bottom...so she comes to us out of some infinite space; and yet the space is almost flat, as if this were shot in a studio w/ backdrops: It has both space and closeness, in other words. These portraits come to us with real ease (regardless of the effort they may actually demand); so, for all the complexity of her gaze and posture---open and closed at the same time---it feels very direct, flush forward. A beautiful, classy image with lots of mystery and command, and panache. More wonderful work from you, Barb.
