Description
When I was working on this piece, I got to wondering about the best altitude for a dogfight and came across some interesting information. It's relative depending on the aircraft performance. The WW 1 range of 5,000-15,000 feet increased to 20,000-35,000 in WW 2, (today maybe about 20,000 to 50,000 feet) based on the aircraft's "best performance" range. If an aircraft's service ceiling altitude is reached, it has almost no spare energy to maneuver...except down. Usually in a dogfight, as the fight progresses the protagonists expend their energy and the fight gets closer and closer to the ground. This amounts to a very dangerous situation that often results in a fiery impact with the lowest service level, 0 altitude, mother earth.
Bf-109 and Spitfire MkXVIe: Two excellent models! Bf-109 by Predatron, and the Spitfire "Clipped Wing" MkXVIe by Pedro Caparros (very generously free at sharecg). Pilots Daz 3Gm with adh3d and Tryphon flight gear.
Models prepped in PoserPro and DazStudio; composed, lighting, some texture tweaking, and rendered in DazStudio; finished in PsCs3

Oh, yeah, one Iraqi Mig-29 in the first gulf war tried to get an F-111 and the pilot of the F-111, with no air-to-air weaponry on board, defeated him simply by flying as fast as he could close to the ground while weaving and jinking. The Mig-29 lost track of where the ground was and hit it. Nice image as usual, and very nice choice of Spitfire model.

Wonderful dynamic composition. Well done.

Great information and render Bill. When it came to plastic kit making the BF109 was always my favourite aircraft.

Great image and work.....!!

great image - though the ME 109 would probably have ditched its drop tank asap - with it still on the drag is a big problem plus its a highly explosive shoot at me to win

Thanks for the kind comment, and thanks for the droptank reminder. (Just consider that the release mechanism got jammed and all is well.)

That is pretty cool staging of the dogfight. This definitely is similar to the old war movies I have seen. Like the motion blur effect. Splendid work on this scene.
