Description

We flew into the wild, blue yonder and have returned to tell about it. As some of you know, Ray and I traveled to Cardiff, Wales and Ireland two weeks ago. He was an invited speaker at a conference and they generously included me in the trip costs. I’ve cobbled together some of the photos and am posting them in 4 separate uploads. This is a boiled down version of a slew of photos, most of them pretty boring since they were shot from the back seat of a small car flying down narrow country roads in Ireland with hedge rows on either side of the road. If you have question, just ask. I may have enough of my brain functioning to be able to answer it. The final group shows the Saturday Milk Market in Limerick. A vast area of vendors selling local produce, baked goods, locally made cheeses, fresh squeezed juices, fresh caught fish, clothing, and more. We purchased breakfast crepes filled with fried eggs, bacon and cheese and ate them on a balcony overlooking the covered area of the market. There were at least three “buskers” playing that morning. The young man shown here was playing the Irish bagpipes. Just down from him, an old man with a guitar was singing an old Kenny Rogers song. The third was cranking out traditional Irish ballads. Quite the place to spend a Saturday morning. Adare itself is a lovely little town. There are pubs, real thatched houses (these are being used as shops now), butcher shops, small groceries and hardware stores – a typical small town. The ruins of Desmond Castle are directly across the road from The Rectory but you have to have a guide to go through them. We spent a lovely time walking along the Maigue River taking pictures and watching the swans and herons. The day we drove to Dublin we stopped at the Barack Obama Plaza, a Truck Stop and Museum in Moneygall. I kid you not. You can look it up on the Internet. Amazing place. We spent the night in a gorgeous hotel near the airport and had an uneventful and ontime trip back to the States. I’ve almost adjusted to being home but I do miss being with Kirk and Liz. Maybe we will be able to do it again – someday.

It appears that the weather co-operated as well. (That doesn't look much like the former president, at least it's not the current president.)

Sounds like the trip of a lifetime! Crepes with cheese and bacon (I'd skip the eggs.... I like them, but they don't like me... 😜) But hey, anything with cheese and bacon...

Great series of photo, Teri!

I've heard about the buskers and other street groups in Ireland and England, and it must be great to hear the variety of music they play, incl some very old, and some very new. Lovely shots of the town and the ruins; and some of those Irish pubs are just the best: They're so classy and they know how to use wood, etc. Also, could you pronounce all the names? I don't mean people names (though some of those are difficult), but towns, areas, etc? Welsh has words with 45 consonants and one vowel: NO one can pronounce them. Irish is close. And they have these word-ends which have 8 letters which are pronounced---all together---as "mmm". Or "nnn". Sounded like a great trip. And no one can end a trip without a shot of the wing overlooking the earth. A delightful series...it was probably hard to adjust to being back home afterwards, even though you live in a beautiful part of the country...
