Description
The Temporal Displacement Engine
"In our universe, order and chaos exist simultaneously. One begets the other. They are not oppositional; they are codependent. In every ordered system, chaos lurks. The very nature of chaos, and the seemingly random outcomes it propagates, are the product of order. By striving to better understand the structure and workings of our universe, we seek to instill order where we see chaos. Yet, by working to make our reality more orderly, we also provide a habitat within which chaos flourishes.
Everything we do, everything we create, stems from this desire to bring order to our seemingly random and chaotic universe. This is why we invented time. Yes, humanity created time.
You see, Polonius and Lady Penelope, time does not exist. It is an artificial construct made by humankind. At the most basic functional level, the concept of time is our way of measuring the rate of decay in the universe around us.
Early attempts at time travel failed because we believed time was real; a physical law of the universe, a linear constant that was present in every system we devised. It was only after we dispelled the myth of time that we were able to see the universe what it truly was: a vast expanse of varying rates of quantum decay. So, the idea of time travel evolved into time navigation. In traversing time, the operational directive changed from 'when' to 'where.'
The Temporal Displacement Engine you see before you is a causality device. Powered by the Singularity Harness, this machine allows the user to move to areas of our universe where the rates of decay are dynamic -- chaotically variable, accelerating and decelerating in non-linear curves. Passing through these regions entangles quantum signatures, enabling those within the device's containment field to maintain their structural integrity while remotely viewing the universe at a different rate of decay. 'When' becomes 'where.' The location determines the rate at which you perceive the building-up or fading-out of the energies around you.
Imagine you are in a sitting room. A roaring fire crackles in the hearth. Standing before the fire, you are warmed by its heat. There is a large window to the outside world. Looking through the window, you see it is gray and freezing outside. Snow is falling. You know it is cold outside, yet you are warm. Using the Temporal Displacement Engine is like looking through that window. The device creates a portal through which you perceive the world in a different state; a state where the level of quantum activity is lesser than or greater than that of the state in which you exist.
You are displaced and what you discern is difference. Even though it is a misnomer, that is what is commonly referred to as time travel."
