BIO I'm an illustrator, and for the last 15 years I have been doing almost exclusively digital work--mostly covers for e-books and small presses; fantasy, SF and Paranormal Romance covers are my specialty. I use Poser, Photoshop and Painter, and a nifty little paint program called ArtRage. I have been lucky enough to have work shown on the BBC's The Sky at Night, done promotional artwork for the Hugos, and have digital art tutorials published in Michael Burn's Femme Digitale and Digital SciFi Art (Watson-Guptill 2004) as well as DVD covers, cd covers and e-book covers, most recently for Liquid Silver Books, Edge/Tesseract and Dragon Moon Press. I'm also a member of the International Association of Astronomical Artists. . When I have time, I do acrylic paintings for fun.
Commissions: I do 3d texturing and backgrounds now rather than book covers, and I do appreciate a good UV template to work on. Thanks for checking out my bio!

Great looking crystals, Lynn! I know a few Jedi that would pay handsomely for those...
I've heard some good things about Wings - might have to give it a spin - like I don't have enough stuff turning my brain into mush..
lwperkins
Wings is supposedly Blender Lite--it is a little quirky in that it works best with a three-button mouse, and it's easier to move the model than the camera (!). It has a very hard to use but very capable UV mapping system that I figured out once and since forgot :D (I use the free UV mapper 90% of the time). Otherwise it is the most stable modeler I have found. btw Loop is hotkey "L" --the designer forgot to put that in the help file, and I had to Google it.
And it's free :D

Cool and great work Lynn.

Thanks everyone! I will post another render when it goes into Freestuff!

Love the glow of them. I have a real live crystal in my cabinet.
lwperkins
I actually made this one for you, since I figured you could run it in Firefly :D

Google optical Calcite! (Trilobite eyes were optical calcite until they discovered contact lenses) and drive yourself crazy with internal reflections! <3<3<3<3
super crystals and so good to hear you are having fun!
lwperkins
I was looking at that! I have pondered different ways of making internal structure and so far I have just tried to do it on the surface, but maybe an grouped plane could be cool. Or thin rods for rutile stuff :D

Beautiful! Excellent work!

Love the crystals 5 Stars

Thanks so much! They are just about ready to be submitted to the long suffering Freebie tester :D

These look great -- both the models and the materials!
If you want to check out another set of crystals to compare modeling methods and/or mats, you can download the 3 Crystals Bracelet I shared in the Freebies about a year and a half ago (). I was aiming for the kind of rough quartz crystals you can get in bulk for jewelry making, in order to make a particular accessory for a story, but these ended up a bit on the smooth side. I studied a lot of crystal models and mats in the process, and it was definitely a learning experience, but I've learned a lot since then so would probably do things differently on another try. For Mac users and particularly MacBook users (w/o mice), I can't recommend Cheetah3D enough as a modeling app!
lwperkins
Oh thank you! That is so nice of you, I will take a look! And you are brave to model on a Mac--I have always modeled on Windows machines because the industry seems geared to that platform, but maybe now there are more options. Making these was fun--I think they still look painted (because they are) and photo props would probably be more realistic.

Fantastically well done !!!

The materials really look nice and the models too. Glad you're taking some time off from RL and doing more 3D for fun. :-)

I just felt like I needed a break from real life :D And wintertime is when we are stuck inside until April in Chicago :D

I started with Wings3D and I often find myself going back and using it again for somethings. I like Hexagon too and even have played with Blender some but I do find I get my head around Wings easier.
lwperkins
I'm interested in trying the new renderer in Blender- but I need a newer computer first :D Hex is fun but a little unstable for me--I have to remember to save a lot in that program, and once a model gets large, it's hard for Hex (or maybe me) to figure out which part of the group is unlocked, so I can modify it. I always forget to use the properties panel on the side.

Congratulations!!

Wooo thank you!!

Awesome :-) I gotta get the hang of superfly :-)
lwperkins
It's really easy, especially if you just use maps and simple procedurals for texturing--Superfly hates complex mat settings, but does a really nice job on image maps. The Renderosity build of Poser seems to have made Superfly faster, too.

Cool

Thank you too!

They look wonderful. If you are trying different modellers Silo is good and Blender has had a big makeover with version 2.8, it's much, much easier to use now.
lwperkins
I'm hoping to earn enough money this spring to buy a dedicated Blender computer, I have heard such good things about the newest build!
