Description

Some people find shots like this depressing....but, to me, it's about the mystery and melancholy of an alley (from di Chirico's title, "The Mystery and Melancholy of a Street")... It's an alley near home, late at night...I pass it every day, and it's a miracle to watch it transform in each type of light: The shadows shift, hidden-sections are suddenly bleached in light, dull walls suddenly become 'electrified'...and you find that the 'lowly alley' has a mystery and melancholy all its own, with many hidden stories...in person, it's strange and rich... A monochromatic version of a color original (which I posted a ways back). In the distance, the towers of Chicago... Thanks for your wonderful visits and support. I wish you all health and wholeness. (please zoom (it's big)) ------------------

I absolutely LOVE photos like this.. I can so easily lose myself in this, Mark. So perfect - leading lines draw the eye right to the one lone figure, and the cluster of streetlights just scream "Look here! Here is the humanity in the midst of this mega-opolis!"

The darkness and mystery of the ally and its lone occupant is contrasted by the distant office building with its brilliantly illuminated windows. Masterful photo, and your postwork is brilliant! More, more... 👍👍

Chicago .... I'm thinking I have no idea what it's like to live there. Certainly my idea of this city is related to what you see in the movies or in the stories of the gangsters.I understand that it is probably a false image like what those who see or visit Venice do but they cannot understand it, as I see it, because you have to deepen its most intimate aspects. This intimacy relative to your city seems to shine through a little from your image, an intimacy with universal notes, melancholy. Melancholy, not sadness as you say, melancholy is loved envelops you almost as protective as a mother, sadness is a sense of despair, of profound terrible loneliness. Thanks Mark because with your images and your words you can take me with my thoughts far beyond the distance of my visual horizon.

... reminiscent of Bedford–Stuyvesant, where I was temporarily assigned many years ago, deserted office buildings stretched far into a darkened night... amid our current medical crisis, I ponder what might become of this and similar places.

I agree with our dear friend from Italy! 👍 It's a very dark and disturbing looking capture, nevertheless I wish you and yours a great new week, stay vigilant and healthy!

Great mono repro of the dimly lit Chicago alley, Mark, enough that it reminds me of the cops, robbers, drunks, narcos, assaults and homeless that I watch on television of the old crime movies, at least one a night. Despite that, this thoroughfare looks rather benign.

This is a wonderful photo. The lighting and coloring is really well done for a night image. This photo has everything from solid walls to iron fences, and a lone visitor to a city in the distance. Lots of contrasts and yet the whole thing is a complete picture. The secrets and stories this alley could tell would be very interesting to hear. I come from a city but your city is so much more interesting and beautiful through your eyes.
