As the carpenter's charm spreads by word of mouth, the old woman took the pretext of her broken cane (maybe she sawed it herself?) to go check it out herself. The carpenter, who is not fooled by her ride, fell out of his chair. He'd better be careful, because his lit pipe fell into his waistcoat.
