Description
I couldn't let this beautiful 57 Chevy by Darkglass go without doing a quality studio render sans props and gorgeous babes (LOL). Yes, after the 40 plus years of doing technical illustrations for a living, I needed to do a strait forward, no-nonsense studio shot to really capture the design and color of the subject at hand. For you nerds out there (you know who you are!) you might be interested in the following. There are six overhead spheres with emissive lighting. They are about 2 feet in diameter with about two-hundred thousand lumins each. I like to use spheres as lights because they give a softer outline on the cast shadows. The main light behind the camera and to the left is a little bit bigger and brighter just to highlight the lower portions of the car. The Rasberry color is a standard metal flake IRAY pre-set shader that I darkened up quite a bit. Darker colors always give a better reflection and gloss quality. That's about all I did as the artist. As for the actual model, I would like to point out the quality of the mesh. Look at the gap in the door seem next to the front quarter-panel and the actual transition of the door to the fender and how they reflect perfectly as if they were made from the same piece of sheet metal. I have found that this is not always the case with many vehicles that are produced for the CG market. A quality mesh is important to a quality render. As a follow up I would just like to say, I did not start out to do a photo-realistic image. I just wanted to see and share this beautiful model with all you folks in the galleries. I am not a photo-realist artist and I do not strive to be. I have to much respect for those that actually are. Once again, thank you Darkglass for this great free-bee! I hope all you car freaks out there download your own copy and do your own thing and share it with the rest of us. :-)

Sweet ride, Dave! Gotta love me a 57... This is a very high quality mesh, better then most that I have seen. Do you have a link or a site name where it can be found?

It was done by one of our own here in the galleries, Darkglass. Just go to his home page and click on his free stuff. EZ, PZ!!!

A most extraordinary and magnificent render and superb presentation piece! Thanks for sharing your process! Most interesting read and I love the result! Many many fine kudos on this most stellar creation! I have downloaded this freebie. I have several other versions of the 57 too. Some free, some I purchased. I will see how they compare some day.

Actually this is the exact color of my 2017 Challenger! Dodge calls it Octane Red with Pearltone. It really is a deep Cherry Red. There are a number of colors that I think would look great on this Chevy. . . I do believe I'm gonna have some fun playing with it (LOL). Thanks again for the great free-bee!!!

This is absolutely fantastic, Dave! This is absolutely gorgeous!! Wow!
I grabbled that '57 Belaire a day or so ago, and can't wait to give it a go. I'm going to have to try your sphere-emissive technique. I've found that also works nicely in Poser too.

you've done a really sterling job on the paintwork and equally fantastic work on the lighting too
