Description

For this render, I had to turn on the CPU as it wouldn't load to the GPU. I'm not sure why. It isn't the most complicated scene, or even the largest I've done GPU-only. It seems since that last patch that the program has gotten a bit fussy, as my previous scene with the yellow car didn't want to render GPU-only, either, unless I restarted the computer first. And even then I did not dare look at a preview first. I actually did some work on that one, playing with SubD to get the car less chunky, and then it wouldn't load at all. Since it wasn't relevant to the work I need to do for my book, I did a system restart and got to work on this scene. Which also wouldn't load to the GPU. The previous version, titled "Skye Pinup" in my gallery, rendered just fine. FAST, too. Frustrating, but eventually I realized I should try turning on the CPU and just wait for a glacially slow render. I also decided, on a whim, to set iterations to 10,000. Doubling it from default. This render after almost 22 hours hit 90%, and then stopped because it hit 10,000 iterations. It's slightly grainy, especially where the DOF blur is. But I rather like it like this. It makes it feel more like it's night time and that there's a storm about to hit. Oddly enough, the render never ran the post denoiser in its process, which would have taken care of the grainy-ness. Oh well. Further proof, I guess, that building a new system in February is a good idea. I'm even going to save up to get at least a $400 graphics card. Go for the full RTX thing. Want to play Quake II RTX anyway. Might even go as high as a $600 card, though that would mean waiting another month or two. Anyways, I like it. I'm going to call it done. Never could find a bandana for Skye, so I'm just going to say that is an artistic interpretation of the scene described in the book and leave it at that. I went ahead and applied SubD to the corvette, and it doesn't appear to be chunky anywhere, despite the fact that its even older than the 36 coupe, so that makes me happy. With some high-res shaders/textures applied, I think it looks MIGHTY fine. Lenny loves her 'vette, yes she does. My Dad had the '63 with the split window in his youth. He liked to talk about that car. It was one of two cars he ever regretted getting rid of. In the case of the 'vette, it was because he was going into the Navy and had nowhere to store it. He left the title in the glove box, tossed the keys in the window, and left it alongside the road. Break the heart, don't it? I look forward to your feedback. Anybody else have a scene that just gave them fits to get it rendered?

Thank you very much! 😀 I'm just glad that after 21 hours rendering I didn't notice some horrendous clipping issue and would have to start over.

Computer problems can be very frustrating. This came out very nicely, though.

Thank you. Now that it's done, it's time to start another one. Hopefully it will be less taxing on my system.

Thank you. I've got the "Darkest Night" HDRI. Two spotlight on the street lamp. One spotlight way back acting as a fill, and an emmisive plane behind the windows of the building. All in all, I think it does a good job of simulating city lighting at night time.

such an amazing setting you've done here. I can feel the moment. atmosphere is spot on along with the character interactions. 5+

don't know if you noticed your artist name on my Poser Gurlz mag I did on Monday.

Wow! That is very cool. I didn't zoom in on my phone, and now I wish I had! 😊

It is certainly a nice piece, too.

Thank you for the feedback. Sometimes I get nervous to show a piece. It's really nice to see others appreciate the work.

I just wish it were this easy to gain readers, too. With visual art, a person just has to happen upon it. They see it, they form an opinion. With a book? If a person don't open it, then it doesn't get read. It can be frustrating sometimes. I know my cover art is good, but... shrugs

Thanks for stopping by and commenting, and especially thanks for the nod in your work.

OMG! Heartbreaking story about the Vette, YESSSSSS! I love this image. You really put your heart and soul into it! The Vette looks smashingly delicious and the girls are stellar characters! What can I say! A most superbly fine image from all angles, especially when reading what you went through to achieve it!

Your Dad's Corvette though, now there is a story for the ages. That Vette now commands six figure prices in almost any condition. It is one of the most sought after models in anyone's Corvette collection! It breaks my heart to think your Dad left it by the side of the road!

On another note, I want to thank you properly for the strawberry girl dedication! I messed up my response to it when I first saw it, even after two tries. Hate this 'gettin old' process but I won't blame it on that. Just have to confess I am just an old fuddy duddy and chalk it up to that. But anyway, many many many thanks for the dedication! It really means a lot to me! You are way too kind to me but I really appreciate it! I have been looking for a strawberry field into which I can pick the choicest berries and send you a wonderful strawberry/ice cream Sunday of sorts. Take care and I hope your computer problems get sorted out for you! I love all your art work and look forward to new additions to your gallery! Many happy returns of the day! Radar_rad-dude

Aww.

Tis very kind of you to say. Gosh! I sure do appreciate it. I've been trying to teach myself to handle compliments better. To that end, I try to always start with "Thank you."

And I don't just say it by rote, either. I struggle with various mental health issues. For the longest time I would just stay silent. But I've been working on showing what that struggle is like, which has led me to this book. I was going to do a web comic, but... I'm a novelist. So a novel it is, and the start of a series that I hope others will come to enjoy.

One of my little "quirks" is that I refuse to lie. So when I say "thank you," it is always with sincerity. Words have the power we give them. Too many great words have been most stripped of their power by overuse/misuse. I'm pretty conscious of it whenever I'm on here leaving comments/replies.

So, again, thank you for your kind words. It means a lot. ~~LA

It looks good - look like she's had a tough day with the torn stockings.

She wants a hot shower and snuggles. Luckily, Lenny will give her both.

sometimes you can't save it from a new window after rendering that long render direct to file on long renders

Interesting. I haven't had the problem, even before I got the nVidia card. Had a few renders that took days to complete because I needed a super-high resolution. I actually want to redo one of those renders because I know how to fix the issue I was having with the character's skin. I've learned a lot, and applying new lessons to an older render is a fun exercise.

I;m going to be doing a system reinstall pretty soon. I plan on installing a 1TB Barracuda drive JUST for Daz studio. Currently my assets are on a drive that I put in to install games to, and there's not really room for new games anymore. Next year I'm going to build a whole new system, and for that I'm considering a 1TB SSD for Daz studio, just to spoil myself.

Thanks for stopping by, Joe. Your input is greatly appreciated! 😀

Daz itself has memory issues. It always has. Long renders, big renders, big scenes, it can have issues with a lot of things, plus memory leaks. In this case, I'd look at two things, mesh resolution (# of poly's) and texture size. HD anything is going to tax Iray, especially if it winds up loading more mb of data than your card has in gpu memory. If you are going into cpu that's what is going on. The second thing that always adds to render times is hair. By it's nature, with textures and a lot of surfaces to calculate, render time will increase dramatically. Scene optimizer is a really good DS script plugin that can quickly reduce memory load

I haven't fiddled with Scene Optomizer yet. I need to, I did purchase it after all.

I'm worried that it might be noticeably different.

However, I supose the best thing to do is to put together a fairly simple scene, do a standard render, then use Scene Optimizer and see if I can notice the difference.

I have had many a scene in Poser that took my older system to its knees. In Poser's case, once you exited the offending scene it would also give you an extra kick in that it would not reload. I feel your pain. This is a lovely work, deserving of getting your on going attention as you work it and explore it for what it wants to be. Well done.

Thank you. These illustrations are provong tricky, which means extra attention, which should also mean they'll be some of my best work. I'm excited to get it done.
