Description

Not my usual style, but I wanted to play with toon shaders, and I was long overdo for loading Aiko 5. The outfit is G-Girl for Victoria 4. Thanks to Mesh Grabber I was able to correct for some of the vacuum effect. I intended something else for the lighting, where I wanted a bunch of rectangular rays coming form the vents beneath her, but that was beyond my current level of skill. Hover, i just pivoted and I think the end result is worth it. The backdrop I used Scene Optimizer on to reduce the resolution, and then applied a cross-hatch style shader from the Sketchy set. This helped her to "POP" more from the background. For her, i used different weights of the outline shaders for various parts. Heavier on clothes than skin, and lightest on the hair. I like how it worked out. As for hair. I know its an old set, but the Xell hair is one of my favorites. It's just soooo good, even now. AND IT COMES IN WHITE! Meaning I can make it whatever color I want. While it had a "plum" mat for it, I felt it just wasn't the right shade of purple to offset the yellow. This is all guess work - I'm actually color blind! But I'm usually pretty good at judging based on tone, and I know what to avoid. Then it was a bit of work to get her lips and nails to match, and we borrowed eyes from another character. (Can't remember which.) I must have spent about two hours just fiddling with the lighting. First on the failed attempt, and then getting this dialed in just right. You can see it come together in my twitch archive. I'm thinking of figuring out how to export the twitch archive to Youtube. Any interest in that? I don't have much time to edit video, so it would be pretty much raw. Maybe occasionally I'd do something special. *shrugs* Anywho, thank you for your support. It's been a rough week. Like, really rough. I'm exhausted, and all the smoke ain't making it easier. I picked up a commission piece that I need to work on, but I want to do my very best so in the meantime I'm more or less just sticking to passion projects. Although I've got the characters for the commission dialed in, and posed and clothed. What's left is the set and the lighting. (Nighttime alley scene - oh my!) So much to do... and I think I'm going to stream again today. I'll be double-posting today as I completed another illustration for the book. This was a 3dlite render, so it went quick. Well, actually it didn't. Well... I'll explain when I post it in a bit. I like to give a little time between them, lol. Pretty sure Aiko here would be quick to put Ryu down, but she's got a thing for uniforms so she might be powerless against Guile and Major Bison.

Very sorry for your rough week, Lyle, my thoughts are with you and yours. Something wonderful has come out of it, though. This is a beautiful image, and not your usual style notwithstanding, I'd say you've kicked its arse, and I sincerely hope you do more like this. Gorgeous colour and style... I would definitely read this story this points to, for sure. :) Awesome work. :)

Thank you. I feel like I'm having a lot of stories end up being inspired by or informed by my work with Daz studio. I gotta hope for an extra-long life so I can write all the books I want to write. Hmm... I love garlic, but there might be a point to becoming a vampire after all. I already don't sleep at night, and love my blackout drapes...

Have a great day. Me? I'm just trying not to exert too much. Not getting enough oxygen in my blood. I got really bad lungs from multiple cases of pneumonia when I was little, and even a few when I was older. The last one a "Dry pneumonia" that nearly killed me. Can't use albuterol, either, so I just gotta do my best. I like to take long walks, too. But right now? It looks like Silent Hill and it's NOT fog.

Thanks for being so lovely.

Very cool! Nice work with the toon shaders, I might have to try that myself! Just for a change, like....

Works really well here, it's got that old school game vibe, so perfect for he subject.

Thank you. It was mostly "Sketchy." I tried out Oso's, but it bewildered me. I also got pwToon, but didn't even look at it this time. Between Sketchy and Scene optimzer, I really tried to dial in that game vibe, all in iray. And just about 5 hour render time.

With Sketchy, I've noticed, the lighting makes all the difference. You can't just light it your typical way, and avoid HDRI entirely. To get the effect you got to play with it. But. It works out. I did a couple portraits a while back I don't think I've posted of Lenny and Lola in this style. I'll have to take a look at them and see if I still like 'em enough to share.

Very nice i should revisit that shader set myself last time i used it it dawned on me that i did something wrong.

It's a little fussy. When I first applied to her stockings what I did to the rest of her clothes, it made them white. But by choosing a different shader it worked. It's a fun set, and is really made to work with your lighting, which is where it gets fussy.

Thank you, eek. Good to find your work over on Deviantart, too. Great to be making these connections. I think more people ought to try, but then I'm known for being crazy. 😁

It can always be a challenge to try out new techniques and new software. Oh...and then, there is always that pesky learning curve, depending on the software you choose. I like what you said about pivoting, as I often do that, when ever I find myself short on talent and skill. I try to concentrate on what I can do then as I don't always have the time necessary to do it the way I wanted to! (sorry I got carried away talking too much :-( You have done an excellent job with this toon render! I Like it! Excellent and very well done! Stay healthy and safe! :-)

I'm known for typing too much, so you're good! Yeah, I think that's been the key for me for a while. With painting miniatures, I learned to pivot, until I landed on a style that I like and can pull off consistently. With digital, it's easier to experiment. I can try something new and I'm not wasting paint. Just time. And when it's therapeutic art in the first place? No such thing as wasted time. I really like stuff like this where I set out to try something new, to learn something, and still ended up with decent art.

You have a great evening.

Thank you very much. It's good to leave your comfort zone every once in a while. I hope to return to painting miniatures this week, and I just cut off my long hair. So. Trying to take steps to make it a better week.

She's looking pretty darn awesome here, bro! You did a great job - as you always do!

I might try streaming at some point, but right now I'm putting together a video of creating a panel for the next page in my TNA story. I'm doing some final edits, and hope to have it up by the weekend (if everything goes to plan).

LyleAryn

11:27PM | Wed, 16 September 2020

Sounds fun! I try to stay away from video editing and just stream live, let it go when its gone type of thing. I'm thinking about reading my first book to Youtube one of these days, editing each chapter. Just not sure what the video part would be.

Really fun work. As to something you mentioned. If you want some post fx of rays , etc let me know. I have some fx that will work in Photoshop or Adobe CS. Take a look at 'Corridor Queen' a few renders back and look at the overhead vent behind her. That is one of the FX.
