Description

In Sean McMullen's Greatwinter trilogy, Cyberlene Zavora, Highliber of Libris, using the advanced Libris telescope discovered ancient technology seeded in high orbit coming to life. Centuries earlier, the pre-Greatwinter society devised a way to counter global warming by beginning the building of a vast sun shield in high orbit. Automated nano-manufacturing self-replicating units designed to build a huge ring around the earth using natural material collected in space were placed in high orbit. Soon afterwards, before the machines could replicate sufficiently, global society collapsed and a chaotic nuclear exchange led to a nuclear winter (called Greatwinter in Zavora's time). An effect of the catastrophe was that suspicions about and fear of technology were codified in religious dogma. In Zavora's time even steam power is prohibited. Electrical power is not only forbidden but is virtually impossible because electrical devices are quickly destroyed by ancient but still-functioning automated orbital war devices called now called Wanderers. Society has regressed to pre-steam times. The orbital sunshield process begun centuries ago only now is coming to fruition as the nano-machines have finally multiplied to an effective number. The result first noticed by Zavora is now visible to all. The ring is called Mirrorsun because it shows a reflection of the sun during the night. Realizing that this sunshield could bring a return of Greatwinter, Zavora has a plan to counter it. She has taken a rocket from a pre-Greatwinter museum and the engineer Denkar has devised a mechanical sequencer to control the rocket without electricity. In the image Denkar makes final adjustments to one of the clockwork controllers prior to its installation at the launch site. Denkar is Aram with Alexios hair from DAZ, wearing Valiant from DAZ, modified with Mylochka's Simple Tunic materials. The clockwork mechanism is from the Hawk Eye 3-axis Tourbillon Clock from Thingiverse by Alduinien. The drawings are from Steampunk Office Interior and the tools are from Tools and Toolbox (DAZ) and John Hoagland's Toolset. The shack interior is the Potting Shed and Tools and the environment is the Australian Outback, both from DAZ. The birds just visible in the background are from Flock Formations from Hivewire3D. The scene, inspired by the Greatwinter trilogy, was composed and rendered in Poser 11 Pro.
