Description
Sammie lets his more reclusive forest pals know that he brought a tasty mushroom for dinner!
==AMY’S NOTES==
When I started working on this, I wanted Sammie to be bringing a mushroom to a creature pal, but none of the creatures I tried looked quite right, for various reasons. So now the creature is relegated to being off screen (and in your imagination!).
In the process I tried several different forest settings, but nothing looks as good or renders as quickly as this set from Stonemason, which is remarkable b/c it’s one of the most peculiar sets I’ve ever worked with. If you own it and have ever pulled back the camera, you know what I mean. Also, parts of the ground are missing, there aren’t many clear spots suitable for characters, and you can’t hide that one plant in the way of the camera w/o hiding the ones you want to show. And yet… I love it and would buy it again!
I do wish I better understood why some scenes with plants render fairly quickly and some are so dreadfully slow. I have a theory that when plant leaves have a lot of surface area that’s made transparent with a map, that makes them render more slowly than when it’s only the edges of the surface that are transparent (like with hair). Fully modeled leaves work best of all, but those are hard to find, possibly due to the common perception that high poly counts cause more problems than trans maps. I do not find that to be true. For me, the main thing that slows down a scene in preview is having lots of conforming items, and the main thing that slows down a render is lots of trans maps. Switching to depth map shadows is faster, but of course the shadows aren’t as nice.
Rendered in March 2022 using Firefly in Poser Pro 11.3 for Mac at 2048 x 1152 pixels. DOF and DepthCue atmosphere enabled. View full size on my blog.

Very beautiful and well done!

Watch out for the kind that makes you trip out on. Joyful fantasy image.

Oooh, maybe Sammie and his pals are in for a surprise! Then again, a forest dweller probably knows which ones are for dinner and which ones are for "dessert" ;-)

Fantastic image. He is sooo cute and yeah that setting is beautiful. Worth it.

Thanks! I set up a bunch of K4 fairies a few years ago, thinking I might use them in a project, which I never did. Most of them are girls, but I set up a few boys, and I'm glad I got the chance to use Sammie! One of these days I'm going to figure out how to fix the broken parts of Stonemason's forest set b/c it's otherwise just so nice. I recently got another one of his outdoor sets (on deep discount) that I'll have to convert for use in Poser, and I'm hoping his newer stuff doesn't have broken parts!

Thanks so much for the comment! I'm often surprised at how well the depth cue atmosphere works! I wonder why people don't use it more often?

I've always liked the enchanted forest set, too. It's certainly the perfect background for this lovely little picture. My granddaughter has been visiting and wanted a fairy picture and she liked this one better than the one I tried making for her. >.< Got to keep working on how to do cuteness, I guess. =)

Glad your granddaughter liked it, Molly! I can totally relate to why you want to try doing "cute." I feel the same way when I see things I admire and wish I could do, like kelchris3's vignettes, Clemenceau's composites, poser4me's futuristic sci-fi scenes, RubyTuesday's portraits, FlintHawk's nature scenery, and your story scenes. I'm often inspired to try and do some of the things I admire in the work of others, but it doesn't usually work quite like I was hoping. Partly it's that my brain doesn't work like that. (I could spend days trying to come up with a background like what FlintHawk uses in one scene and never come up with what she did!) And partly it's that I have to accept that I have my own style and that style won't work on all kinds of scenes. You did a great job turning your attempt at "cute" with the cat girl and Jori into an adventure story that totally suits your style!

Such an adorable fairy in a perfect setting!
That is an interesting possibility for why some plants render so slowly! I'd wondered about that too.

Thanks for the comment! And thank you for being the only one to comment on the issue of slow-rendering plants :-) I suppose I could pose this question in the forums. But in the meantime, I will just try to avoid using trees and plants that slow down renders b/c that really drives me crazy! I so often have no idea what I'm doing or where I'm going as I mess with a scene, so I do dozens upon dozens of test renders, until something starts to look interesting, and I can't stand to do that with slow-rendering plants! I wouldn't mind so much if it was only the final render, but if I have to wait 5-10 minutes just to see a quarter-sized test render, I will have likely become distracted by something else in the meantime :-)

It has magical properties as well! Lets feast! Bravo! Another super fine work of art and a happy scene! Well accomplished production!

Thanks for the comment! I do wonder if Sammie knows just what kind of mushroom he's offering to his pals. Is this a "dinner" mushroom or more of a "dessert"? ;-) One thing's for sure: Mush will NOT be partaking!

It's a very cute and nicely done image!

A fabulous image, true forest magic! Love who you used DOF and DepthCue to focus the viewer's eye on the character! Very well done!
perpetualrevision
Thanks! DepthCue and DOF do seem to work nicely together. I've never noticed DepthCue atmosphere slowing down a render, but DOF certainly does (though not nearly as bad as volumetric atmosphere!) DepthCue alone can give a bit of a faded or hazy look to the background, so in a larger scene sometimes that's all I use, but I also added DOF to this one to help the character stand out, as you mentioned. Otherwise this particular forest set tries to steal the show :-)
