Description

(The description is the same for both the color image and the B&W) This is one of the times I could just not help posting both a color version and a B&W one. When I decided to make this portrait I wanted to do it in B&W, so in my mind the B&W version is the "official" one. But I also liked the color version for completely different reasons, so I decided to post it too. As for the title, this time my Italian blood won, when I finished this render and looked at it (the B&W version) this song by Lucio Battisti immediately popped into my head and there it stayed. I tried thinking of an English title and Overjoyed was my first thought, so I decided to use that for the color version. I already know why Grandma Myrtle is so happy, and I will make a render of the whole scene. But why do YOU think she is so overjoyed? Leave your thoughts, and I might make a render of that too. (If you pick the one I have in mind already I will say so). Technical jibber jabber: the B&W has a slightly wider angle and tighter crop because I wanted to get closer and focus on her expression. When I made the color version and added the setting I had to adjust that a bit (not really much of a difference but enough to make me render the scene twice and not just convert the color one). The panel from the light shows in her eyes and I know that might not be ideal for a scene that should have natural lighting, but I tried changing that too and I missed having that reflection there. So I put it back. Same goes for the tear in the eyes, tried turning that off but I kept going back to the one with the tear. No wonder it takes me forever to finish my renders. Have a great week everyone, and thanks for stopping by!

I favorited both of them, but between the two, I like this one a bit better b/c of how much if focuses on her expression and body language, and the grayscale brings out such interesting tones in her skin. It also really highlights the emotion in her eyes. Such a beautiful and moving portrait! (You should've entered this in the portrait contest!! But if you're like me, you never think of an idea for a contest entry until the deadline has passed :-)

I would guess that she's overjoyed to see someone she didn't expect (but really wanted) to see, maybe even someone she didn't think was still alive? She seems too full of emotion for it to simply be her grandkids coming to visit for Easter, unless she hasn't seen them in years, perhaps! I do not think she's excited over a new car :-)

Oh no...I made this precisely for the portrait contest!!! Which is why the B&W. And now I have to start on the second one. Portraits are what I live for, that's why I became interested in photography. If I had to choose just one thing to photograph it would be people. And mostly I love portraits that capture a person's emotions, their soul. I especially love how expressive old people can be so that's why I started with this one. I could walk the streets and photograph people for days on end. And the photography books I have bought are either portraits or street photography. I'm glad you prefer this version, I do too. If I had to choose just one it would be this one.

As for the motive, I think it was too easy lol. Yes she will finally be seeing a grandchild (although not specifically for Easter, but considered it's around the corner if could be a possibility). I want to do the other two portraits for the contest first and then make the full scene. Thank you so much for your feedback Amy!

Her eyes with tears are beautiful! I am going to check the color version why black and white is the official version.

I think I like this camera setting better but not as many details in the background as the colored one. Though I think this one is more evocative.

I made this one first, then I added the background in preparation for the full scene. At first I tried converting the new image into B&W, but I had slightly adjusted the angle and lens and it was just enough to make me go back to the original and render it again. It's just slightly a bit more "in your face" and I liked that for the B&W version. Also the background was ok, but seemed a bit more distracting (I think I was just used to seeing the B&W with the plain background). I think these are the factors that contribute to making it more evocative. Thanks again for popping in, I really appreciate the feedback!

There's little I can add to Amy's commentary except that as a grandmother myself I was betting on a first meeting with a grandchild who she does and will always cherish.

IN this BW version her eyes do really stand out more, but they are almost filled in tears, maybe it's just my melancholy mood
