Description

The photography visit that happens toward the end of every academic year at St Tibb's assigns a day per Year Group, so after Nadia's portrait is taken, the next day Holly Hewson (being in Year 8 as opposed to Nadia's 7) sits in front of the camera and smiles for her photograph. A few days later, Holly is given a watermarked sample of her picture, an order form, and instructions to show relatives, carers, and other interested parties the portrait and ask if they wish to have copies of it (available in different sizes). She shows it around to her family members and receives enthusiastic praise for how lovely the photo looks in capturing the essence of the Holly they know. She gets the quantities and money together with plenty of time before the deadline for processing the orders, but on the day before she has decided to hand everything in, she takes the opportunity to discuss things with her parents, wondering if she might have forgotten some distant relation she only sees perhaps once a year. "Let me have a look at who's put their name down, love," her mother says. Holly hands over the order form and Jennifer scans down the list of names. "I see..." she muses, thinking of anyone that might not have been included on the list. "No, I don't think you overlooked anyone. I see you got your great-aunt Margaret. It's not a nice thing to say but she's often the one that everyone forgets about." "She sent me that lovely handmade birthday card, Mum! There was no way I could forget her," Holly explains. "I've still got it upstairs. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it." "That's nice," Jennifer says with a smile. She pulls Holly's portrait photograph out of the envelope and looks at it again. "This really is a lovely picture of you, dear. Tell you what... put me down for another at the biggest size. I think I'll take it to painting class and see if I can copy it. Always best to take in spares because I don't know how it happens but things I take in usually end up with spots of paint on them afterwards. I don't even see it happening but it does!" "Okay, Mum," Holly says and changes the order form to reflect her mother's intentions. "But a painting of me? Looking like this? I mean... look at my mouth with those braces. I hope you don't paint those in!" Jennifer chuckles kindly. "I might, I might not, but they've defined your smile for the past year so it would be wrong to exclude them if this is meant to be you at this age." "Yeah, I guess..." Holly sighs. "Don't worry, love. It's only a few months before they're out," Holly's father adds. "True, Dad," Holly says, "very true. But I should have maybe kept my mouth closed. I dunno. The photographer sometimes says and does silly things to get us laughing and smiling for the pictures but I noticed some of the girls kept their mouths shut and he's okay with it." "No, no, Holly," Jennifer says. "We went over this last year when you first got them in and it's still true now: No one really cares. Everyone knows what braces are these days, and it's not like you're the only one who's got them. No, dear, you keep on smiling the way you always have." Holly nods but does not say anything more on the subject of braces. All she knows is that, as her father pointed out, she only has a few more months before she will be free of them, and that's all that matters. "I see your... um..." Jennifer looks nervously at Holly's father for the briefest of seconds, "... your sister's on the list and she's ordered one. That's nice of her." "Of course she'd want one!" Holly cries. "She's got one from every year I've been getting school photos, did you know? Got them all in this album, and it's funny sometimes to look through and see me growing up to where I am now. This one will go straight into her album, without a doubt, and bring it up to date." Peter Hewson stays quiet and pretends his dinnerplate needs careful attention so that he does not have to comment on the current topic of their older daughter. "So..." Holly announces as she reads the change in atmosphere, "... if I've missed nobody out, I'll be handing the form in tomorrow. If you think of anyone before tomorrow morning that I didn't ask, let me know before I leave for school. There's still a few days before the last day to hand it in." Cute school portrait of Holly! And what a contrast between her parents and Nadia's! Although, of course, there's still the tension over Kate. Because families never make it easy :-)

Thanks! I tried to throw in a handful or parallels between what happened at Nadia's and what went on here.
