Description

These are two of the gazillion sketches I did of insects an eon ago. I was looking at Barb/bakapo's magical 'Insect Mummy' (her most recent upload as of now), and I remembered what it was like to study these whacko creatures. We'd say: "Go get an insect to pose..." (They're not a patient lot...) So we put them in jars to keep them still, and studied the hell outa them with magnifying glasses. (We didn't hurt them. Though they got a wee bit restless...) They're phantasmagorical! Consider: They have all these rickety parts, Frankenstein-like joints and segments, tinker-toy-like appendages: As if they were put together in a laboratory. And then the wings: Even non-fliers have them, and some of them are like stained glass! W/ wondrous segments, hues, and veins galore: Such patterns! And, close-up, they got heads like ceramic dolls: Take a macro of one: They're like glazed pottery. They're this whole ocean of tiny beings, gettin' into everything, hugely diverse, immensely complex, and some worthy of glass from Tiffany's. So I thought I'd upload a couple sketches for Halloween. The top one, btw, is named "Grigory" (he's a roach), and the bottom four are named---top-left, clockwise---"Greta, Leonid, Chandra Mukherji (she's from Calcutta), and King Philipe the Third---of Spain. (The last one's a little pompous, but hey, when you got wings like that, you get pompous.) Happy Halloween everyone! Still commenting, but I've gotten to almost all of you. Have a fine weekend! m (drawings, colored digitally) ------------------

You have talent my friend...this art work you are sharing with us Mark, is beautiful! They may have started out as sketches. yet you morphed them into wonderful works of art. :-)

these are wonderful sketches. the colors are beautiful, like graceful stained glass.... well, except for Grigory because, well because he's a roach, and his color is very roachy. I'm glad you got to study insects so closely and appreciate their makeup, most people don't bother. I'm glad I reminded you of this topic and image with my image, too. I should try and see what other bug-like thing I can render. I absolutely adore the fact that you named these guys. (King Philipe? LOL!)

I like that you saved so many of your sketches and can now share them years later. It shows the journey you've been on.

Grasping beauty in your manipulations Mark. My back is so painful right now. But much enjoyed this group.

I always enjoy your photo/sketch manips, Mark. The butterflies/moths are wonderful--the roach, eh...As far as insects are concerned, as long as they remain outside of my home, I am totally fine with them, but once they pass over the home-outdoors threshold, it's war :) If anyone has a roach problem, I highly recommend Diatomaceous Earth--works wonders and it's non-poisonous...

Movement, dancing full of energy, colors and facets, and yet posted as 2D here. And I wonder, of which I'm more impressed of, your humor, their names, or this explosion as an impressive whole. But you are it, all the way back, and how! Thank you, dear friend, if I'm now on my way with my camera on insect hunt, or if I'm drawing them or painting, I'll always think of you. :D
