Description
-o§o-________ A huge chariot set ablaze among dozens of others has just passed through the gates of the medieval town of Liestal (near Basel) under the wooden old archway that a bunch of firefighters apparently calm though on the look-out for any possible mishap, keep watering so as to prevent the archway from catching fire. On this freezing night of the last day of Carnival, the temperature of the procession of fire wagons and flaming torches carried by men and women of the village is almost unbearable at times, so saturated is the air with the heat of the blazing logs that parade along the main street for an hour and a half.
________-o§o- Yet, this scene takes place in a country known for its legendary discretion where everything is under control, orderly, clean, without excess, calm, i.e. Switzerland ! .
________-o§o- Actually, the Swiss do have a great sense of humor, and to prove it, some of them do not hesitate to grill sausages at the end of a stick, as the carts keep parading in the main street, to achieve perfect cooking results, as you can see on the left to the photo here ! I took this photo two weeks ago, and enjoyed this amazing fire celebration to the full, like everybody else there, while remembering that the Liestal Carnival was called off three years running because of the Covid pandemic ...

Pendant une heure et demie, des chariots de feux et des villageois portant des nacelles de bûches enflammées s'engagent sous la porte médiévale de la ville et forment une procession hallucinante dans la rue principale plongée dans le noir absolu. La chaleur plus qu' infernale et le spectacle des flammes hautes de plusieurs étages parfois, engendrent cris d'effroi, clameurs et rires. Certains spectateurs tendent même des bâtons au bout desquels des cervelas sont piqués (à gauche sur la photo). Bon appétit ! Ce carnaval unique au monde, passe au grill tous les clichés que nous avons sur l'âme hélvétique ! Des liens vidéo ci-dessus pour une expérience plus directe de l'ambiance ! Bon week-end à tous!

I just viewed this amazing display of fire on the two videos you posted and they both looked awesome. The firefighters took no chances in keeping the fire under control. I hope everything is well with you and thanks for sharing the awesome photo and videos...I will like one of the sausages they are cooking, well done please! "lol" :-)

I was a bit alarmed when I saw the thumbnail. Glad it wasn't anything bad and the Swiss were having a good time. Even using the fire to roast sausages!

Très impressionnante et superbe photo ! Je connais le Morgenstreich de Bâle mais pas le carnaval de Liestal donc merci pour les informations qui sont très instructives. Les cervelas grillés à gauche de la photo m'amusent beaucoup c'est très suisse comme viande à griller sur le barbecue et là il y a de quoi en griller pour tout le canton de Bâle :) Merci pour le partage de ce très bel et flamboyant instantané !!

Un bout de cervelas ? Non, merci, pas ce soir ! mais tout plein de photos aussi réussies que celle-ci et des informations intéressantes sur les moeurs suisses, oui ! on en veut encore ! Les Suisses que j'ai fréquentés jadis étaient beaucoup plus coincés que ça et portés sur les processions religieuses, à ma grande répulsion !

Mon Dieu! J'aurais une peur bleue de voir ce défilé de flammes. Heureusement, les Suisses sont très organisés et très prévoyants et je suis certaine que la sécurité était bien assurée. Régulièrement, tu postes des superbes photos de cet événement pour notre plus grand plaisir. Merci! Pour ma part, je goûterais volontiers un petit bout de cette saucisse grillée visible sur ta photocar le cervelas est ma saucisse préférée 😋. Excellente capture mon ami. Bravo!
