Description
This scene depicts the capture of KING JUGURTHA of NUMIDIA - after fighting a protracted war against the Roman Republic, he was captured in 105 B.C. and turned over to SULLA, who at the time was serving as Quaestor to GAIUS MARIUS. Once reasonably close, the two men would have a bitter falling out when Marius took sole credit for Jugurtha's capture, though Sulla thought he should have gotten the credit. (After marching in Marius' Triumph parade a year later, Jugurtha likely would have been strangled to death, as was Roman custom). This feud between these Marius and Sulla would end up having bitter consequences in the next few years for Rome, eventually leading up to Sulla actually marching on Rome with his armies and declaring himself DICTATOR...
