As you can see the rings are not only around the neck but also around the legs and arms. The rings around the upperarms aren't visible because of her clothing, but they're there. I estimate they carry around 15-20kg of metal all the time.
As a side note, those rings are taken of once a year to clean them. This is most dangerous as the neckmuscles are very weak and the risk of a broken neck is evident.

From what I learned it all started out as a kind of beauty contest between villages. In the same village there are some big eared Kayans who put big rings in their ears. And I do mean a ring IN the hole, not through it. In the long run, the women of the longnecks were concidered the most beautiful apparently.

what an experience for you to be there in person! enjoying these very much- since I don't get to travel much....yet
