Description

"I can't write about the program behind my art. Because I reckon this is up to scholars and academics,or better, this is up to posterity even, who works from a teorical and scientific, and not creative, point of view. The source of artistic force is in the unconscious and spontaneous. So any kind of critic to any finished piece is possible from me only by a sensitive point of view." Erich Heckel -------------------------------------------- This is my homage to Expressionism, subject is STARVING, and it's made in pencil 2B. Quite different from my usual style ;) I guess :P --------------------------------------- The Expressionism is often related in artistical definition to a number of characteristic of any work which is meant to express the individual feeling of the artist through his images more than a realistic approach and portrait of the objectivity of the world outside. The Expressionism forces the viewer to feel with immediate link the emotions and the psychological reactions of the art creator towards what he lives and experiences and THINKS. But in the proper meaning and role in Art History, the Expressionism is a wave which applies to the German painters of the first decades of 1900, who wanted to get beyond the rendition of visual reality around them, breakin with the impressionism roots in full. For understanding the Expressionism, it's useful to remember those who paved the road for it, being in the middle between impressionism , fauves and expressionism itself:Van Gogh, Gaugin, Ensor, and Munch. And a certain heritage is also in the works of painters linked to the fantastic such as Goya, Blake, Redon. But if in these artists we can find pre elements of expressionism linked to symbolistic languages, it's only in Dresda, 1905, that the real Expressionsm comes, through 4 architecture students's plans of creating a society called Die Brucke (The Bridge), an union of wills against the tradition and for the freedom of expression. Their basilar belief is "the emotional experience of life", namely the portraying of the reality following the emotion that the meeting with it blossoms into the artist, through the coming further away from true representation of objects seen and the progressive deleting of the 3d dimension, which is seen like nothing but fake space and fake volume for them. The three major names of the Bridge were Kirchner, Heckel, and Schmidt-Rottluff. In Austria, a variation of Expressionism of huge impact was lead by Kokoschka, and under different and very personal perspective, by Egon Schiele.

Such an emotional and expressive message. You definitely have illustrated Expressionism very well. At first glance, you think the baby is overfed, but then you realize that it's stomach is bloated from not enough food, and then you notice the bones showing in it's limbs. Excellent style.

A remarkable piece if I may say so.. :) Grabbing ones attention instantly. And so dark and good. I really don't have much words to say about it, as none would be worthy. Great, great..and hope you'll do some more in this style in the future :)

Meli, another moving piece. I'm not used to expressionism without color, but you have managed to still meet your purpose. Great job!

Aha! The darkside Meli... I've been patiently waiting to see this since you told me about it on Wednesday, and the result does not disappoint. It pulls no punches, and coincidentally the subject and depiction fits so aptly with the Beksinski work I pointed you to last night, particularly his "embrace". What I really find twisted about this one is the intricate "squiggle" texture which reminds me of surgically exposed body fat tissue: it really looks as though the mother's breast has been bitten into, as if the baby is starving so much that it's literally eating its mother alive. I also like the way the mother is growing out of the ground as if like a tree: and here is perhaps an interpretation you may not have thought of at the time (or maybe more likely it was exactly your intention) - that the depiction is of Gaia and the baby is humanity, starving itself through its own blind self-abuse, and taking the Mother Earth with it. Biting the hand (or in this case, breast) that feeds it. Very successful and very powerful hugs :-)

OH DAMN! I rrrreally like this. This is exceptionally full of expression and contains a great message (at least i see that as the message). I see this as the fruits of hunger. Physical hunger or mental hunger. Those with artistical hunger may start feeding themselves with the dark sides of life. Addiction is the mutual dependency that destroys both. I could go on and on to explain, 9cuz I'm not finished yet) but I just want to say that this is my favorite image by you so far!

I am going to hide under the bed. I am traumatized by your powerful and and pain driven piece. I don't know how you can kick out so many pieces so soon. All kidding aside, it looks creepy and dark and has a lot going on, it makes me sad. Power perceived is power achieved? hugs. -C

You should show more of this side of you, cause this is so powerful and expresses so much, both taken literally and symbolically. Great Meli!!!

I thank you all, and Jim: YOU EXACTLY penned what I wanted to say :) Also syndroid's analysis is actually applying, the mutual dependence when everything else is lost is there :). To Barb... I would have loved to colour it, (it would be requested in teh wave) but when I saw it I was like.. I'd ruin it trying to ;). I am glad you all are liking these new things by me :) You are a comfort :) Hugs :)

The piano is very flatland and has a bridge. Perhaps in this is the combat between musicians and computer technology most defined. So here the wasted breasts and bloated belly of the infant argue for leaving rural and agricultural society.

Bravooo Meli
