Seven Seas Of Rhye
Killer Queen
We Are The Champions
I've paid my dues
Time after time
I've done my sentence
But committed no crime
And bad mistakes
I've made a few
I've had my share of sand
Kicked in my face
But I've come through
And I need to go on and on and on and on
We are the champions - my friend
And we'll keep on fighting till the end
We are the champions
We are the champions
No time for losers
'Cause we are the champions of the world
I had some difficulty with Freddie's
face. I went over it many times
and studied more than a dozen
photographs. I think there is a
likeness, but I must admit to you that
I am not satisfied. I re-drew the face
at least 4 times and now leave it to
you. If you can extend some helpful
critiques, I will gladly take them.
I will not accept "that looks
nothing like him" comments or anything
that is mean or destructive. That is not
helpful to me and it is not to be
considered under the pervue of
constructive criticism. Constructive
Criticism offers help to be able to
effect change. I only go over this
because I have received comments from
some that did not help and in fact,
were harsh. Others of you, and
you know who you are, have always
been very generous in helping me to
grow as an artist. I am hopeful you
be able to take the time to view some of
Freddie's photos and this sketch so that
you will be able to offer some help.

I am glad I can write here for first :) :) :) A touching tribute. I was adoring Queen in my teenager times. This piece of yours touches me totally :)

I honestly don't know what Freddy looked like, but this is one of your best portraits in terms of proportions, shading, style. Awesome work and I agree with the Excellent.

A great potrait Cheryl, you captured the essence of the man, he was a genuine rock legend!

Very bold and exspressive.

I never really got into the group Queen until after seeing the silly movie Flash Gordon. After listening to the soundtrack, I enjoyed their unique sound very much. With your unique style Cheryl - you too have begun to capture the hearts of those fortunate enough to come across your gallery. What you draw, like Freddie's music - originates from deep inside the heart. The face on this portraiture - or rather - 3/4 study, is one of your very best. To get as technical as bijouchat is warmly suggesting, would in my humble opinion, detract from the feeling and depth of your hand drawn imagery. One drawing from the heart is worth 10 technically accurate renders - keep these coming Cheryl - I for one enjoy your work.

Brava!!! Fantastic work, Cheryl!! I always loved Mr. Mercury's voice and your picture is a wonderful tribute to a talented man. It is sad he died of AIDS and will be remembered. Thank you for doing this beautiful portrait!

I think you have two likenesses in one face in terms of the photos. He looks young. You have succeeded at that very well. The pictures with the moustache his face is thinner. So that is your dilemma. This picture is entirely possible in a candid moment. thus youhave done well as an artist. Forget that in some pictures he looks obviously gay or obviously dapper or even a bit jaded and older. Yours is an artistic review missing in the photos. Like the fight with the mike the lyrics are bustin' out in your render and there is no story only a stage.
Flycatcher
You have done an excellent job in capturing the essence of the man - it is unmistakably Freddie. I think the main problem with the face is that it should be a little thinner and from memory I think the mouth should be a little broader. But even from the thumbnail, there is no doubt who is represented. Well done.

edited - original comment: you've done very well. Portraits can be very hard to do. A tip that works for me well is to trace some vector paths around the important facial outlines of his face, from a scanned image in a program such as illustrator or freehand (or even a later version of Photoshop), then take the vector paths into the paint program of your choice (mine is photoshop, but many love Painter for its natural media tools) or print them and transfer them to the paper or canvas you're working on. Then keep a photograph nearby for reference as you render it out.
disagree with racin-jason... go look in my gallery for my Bardot and my own self portrait for use of the technique... I pioneered it when doing portraits of people's animals for money. I shared it because I read that Che wanted a sensitive constructive critique, and thought she might like my tip. I think the picture of Freddie is excellent - I was offering some techniques that work for me and could work to improve the accuracy of anyone's portraits. It can make money as a side business, so going from VERY VERY good to GREAT can only be a wonderful thing. ;-)
