Description

This is another render from the Spaceport of Men Kalinan. I was much inspired by Rochr's awesome work - the master of lighting! The original render ( http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=250756&Start=1&Artist=RedSteve&ByArtist=Yes ) suffered from some problems with repeating artifacts in the light beams. I discovered how to get rid of the problem, which is to set the lights to have 100% soft shadows. The problem is that this pushes the render time up to stupid values. The orginal image took about 2hrs to render on a single 1.8Ghz PC - this version, which has 35% less pixels, took 4 P4 2.0 Ghz machines 82 hours! I had some helpful suggestions on the last render from some other artists on how to deal with this issue, but unfortunately, to get the effect I want, this seems the only way. Unless anyone else has any more ideas?

Ooooh, very nice lighting and a very very good image. At 82 hours, I'd say its definitely worth it :) Hot 20.

Ace. don't matter what program you run in, if you want premium volumetric effects you have to set very high values ;-)

Thanks to you all for your very kind comments. I'm feeling lots happier about the time it took already. There is more sci-fi on the way!

A shame about the rendertime, is it worth the picture it created, i mean 82 hours and you needed 4 machines running at 2.0 GHz.

Simply awesome!!! The place looks gigantic and has just the right atmosphere! Love the idea with all those ports at the left. And of course, the lighting is superb! A very fine scifi piece! :) Deserves a vote! :)

Use a cylinder with transparent white material, set the falloff so it's brighter in the middle, and use that to 'fake' the volumetric light effect.

4096, thanks for the comment, but that won't work - I have used this technique in other pictures before. If you look at the ship coming through the port at the top centre, it cuts of the light beam coming through behind it. A cylinder would be continuous beyond items intersecting it.

Lovely image and worth the huge effort of man and machines. Too bad you posted such a small render for all of that.

The improvement made the image really good. I like the overall design of this... you exactly hit the right atmosphere.
