Description

Canon 10D + Sigma 28-300mm Hyperzoom (at 96mm) ISO 200 f5.6 1/4000 Last summer was very hot...the hottest summer, in fact, that I ever remember. Without air conditioning, and only a tower fan to keep air moving, my room reached temperatures in excess of forty degrees celcius. My printer stopped working properly because of these high temperatures...and...worse still, many trees died due to heat and lack of water. I think that this may well have been one of the casualties, standing starkly against the sky, surrounded by life all around him. It almost felt like he had 'caught' death from the ground around him (told you yesterday this was a forboding pic, didn't I? Bodes it does...). Anyway, in the original, the sky had a slight orange/brown tone to it, so I decided to play around and make it completely orangey/brown. I hope it doesn't look like any old sepia image, because it was meant to look more like a normal colour photo that has just picked up on distant fires reflecting into the sky. Tomorrow, one of my favourites, as I look down from death into life. Thanks for viewing.

There's a feeling of defeat, surrender here. The tree's boughs frozen in death after a writhing, hopeless struggle to hold it's grip on life.

scream in the silence... seems to me. that if all around is in silence and resting in peace, than this tree is demanding for life... love the contrasts youve created:)

Agree with above comment - the phrase 'all fall down' comes to mind. That childhood game where children drop to the ground in mock death. The tree is in the right place. Excellent again.

You know, we have summers like that here, but if it wasnt for the airconditioners, I dont think I would be here today. A great shot, with a great story

It almost feels to me like the tree is making one last effort to reach up to the sky and live.. Stephen, you've already described this as forboding, and I definitely agree, but there is almost a hint of hope to it... The whole notion of "catching death from the ground around him" sends shivers up my spine, and the fact that you've given "him" a life of his own really adds to the sense of longing... The desire to go on and reach further...

Deep emotional shot... very moving! The contrast is fantastic! Love how the shapes of the tree go so well with the clouds.

By this image you expressed death very well, cause the tree doesn't have any definition.

it looks like theres a face in the clouds with an arm reaching down towards the tree and tree is trying to retreat but is stuck...looks good to me.

What a beautiful sillohete (sorry-can't spell it)! This tree is so full of life. It may be dying but it's hanging on for dear life. so full of character and strength...reminding us we can get through the worst times. VOTE
