Description
Gamelan Instruments
Here are some of the instruments from the Gamelan picture I recently posted. I'm still working on building and texturing Indonesian costumes for the people that will eventually be in the scene.
In the center is the "kajar" - a small 'kettle gong' used by the timekeeper. Behind it is a "kendang" (drum). In a Gamelan ensemble, the "leader" is the drum player. Several sizes of drum are used.
At the left is the "rabab", a bowed instrument with 2 strings, and behind it is the "gambang" with its curved range of wooden keys, played with two mallets.
At the front-right is a "saron" - the body is carved from a single block of wood, and has a central resonating cavity beneath the bronze keys, which are played with a single wooden hammer. Behind the saron is the "gender" (hard 'g' - as in "gate") - with a range of bronze keys suspended on cords over individual bamboo resonators; also played with two mallets.
The gambang, saron, and gender are "paired" instruments, in an ensemble they always are played in pairs - with 'interlocking melody' - players on the paired instruments play 'alternating' notes, and the 2 patterns fit together to form a single melody line. With some instruments, such as the saron, there is a second, larger pair of instruments which plays the same patterns as the smaller instruments, but an octave lower.
Parts crafted in DesignCad 3D and Carrara, assembled with Bryce primitives in Bryce 5.

WOW! As a lover of all music and one who has played on a pro level I can truely say that I find this piece along with all the others in this series fascinating. I have seen Indonesian musicans preform in NYC manytimes and your artistic recreation of their instruments is right on time. Excellent work
