Description
Sapphires of Summer
In the heat of a Georgian summer
When you can slice the humidity
And flowerbeds wilt before dawn
There is a plant that thrives
A plant that transforms the day.
My daughter married a family
Who settled in these hills
At a distant time when I-85
Was but a dusty mule wagon road.
Papa and Nell built their house
Next to her folks on the other side
Of the pecan tree o'er a little path
And raised four boys in clan McCright.
Recently though, just twenty years ago,
They planted some bushes to plan ahead
For when the heat of summer came to be
Sapphire jewels would beckon on high.
Birds are given the ones out of reach
And we all gather round the middle
With smaller members eating heartily
From sapphires on branches below.
Now the folks are passed on to heaven
And the forty acres have been sold
To developers that have no heart
For sapphire blueberries of summer.
So Papa and Nell will take a few
And I will take the others for
Saving these jewels of our summer
Must be carried on as tradition.
Grandson Sean now only four
Blueberry Boy his sister says
Will have his summer's fill
Eating his sapphire jewels.
And when I am dead and buried
With Nell and Papa for company
Our family tradition will carry
With future Blueberry children.

How lovely ... a wonderful family tradition beautifully described. It's sad that these poignant links between generations are becoming a rarity. Sapphires, yes ... and this poem is a jewel certainly.
