Description

The disjointed ice on the right was once more connected, as you can see. Different velocities of the ice and the structure of the bottom of the valley break the ice-cover into seperate pieces of ice with deep crevasses between them. That illustrates the danger of crossing glaciers, falling in a crevasse is a danger that should not be underestimated! Ice on glaciers has remarkable blue tones. The color is just as real as you can see it in this series. The blue color of the ice is caused by light shining through ice with oxygen in it. I ask myself why snow doesn't appear so blue, because it contains more air. Do you have a physical explanation? The united crowd starts to run here to go down, as lemmings hastening to the sea, where they can reunite in molten form, to be together for ever in freedom.... It is a desaster! Where have our mighty glaciers remained? Remember what I said about the skeleton. The genesis of the ice of a glacier is very interesting: It is nothing more than impacted snow, with endless high pressure. And if the glacier is much more melting below, than snow is falling at the top of the glacier, then... well, your nice clear shot shows it. About the blue color: I really don't know how much oxygen is located within the glacier, but I think it is nothing more than refraction and reflection, that shows different colors for snow and ice. But you are right: the deep blue of a glacier can't be compared with anything else! Important documental shot!

Really wonderful sight and shot... As for your question - maybe it's cos snow doesn't 'trap' & hold the oxygen inside it, like ice does?

I'm fascinating by glaciers, they move at their speed but they move. This is the magic of earth. Great shot my friend !

I do like the blue of the ice. I have only seen glaciers close up in Glacier National Park, the Athabasca Snow fields and on Mt. Rainier. This Swiss example is very different. It has character in a channel.
