Description
Something tells me these were very noisy machines in their day.
Battleship Cove at Fall River, Mass. in Oct 1987.
Scanned from a print. Sorry, no on board photos, we got there just as they closed for the day.
Left: Joseph P. Kennedy, Destroyer (target).
Middle: Lionfish, Submarine (yeah!)
Background: Massachusetts, Battleship (BIG target)
3D filter used with maskes over the water and some of the clouds. Off-scene lights: Dark Green and Dark blue for the sky. Dark Green for the water.
Framed and hung on Renderosity to dry.
Enjoy; thanks for viewing.

As someone who spent 10 years in the Navy, I can tell you that a ship of this size really wasn't that noisy. Yes, the lower engine rooms were a bit noisy, but the rest of the ship was relatively quiet. The hum of most pieces of equipment was reduced by sound dampening wrappings and small rooms/compartments that could be closed off to reduce the equipment noises. Are you sure this is the USS Massachusetts? It looks more like an Iowa-class battleship before her 1980s refit, which removed most of her smaller amidships gun turrets, added the Vulcan Phalanx anti-missile systems, added the coffin-like cruise missile launchers, and removed the anti-aircraft batteries on top of the main turrets. Anyway, a sad picture of a beautiful ship.

This is for sure the USS Massachusetts. Easy to tell, since her number(59)is visible. It is also not an Iowa class, but, a South Dakota class commissioned in 1942. She was the first and last ship to fire a 16" shell in anger during World War II. "Big Mamie" served with distinction until 1962 when she was ordered stricken from the Navy registry. Beautiful accurate and historical shot of a beautiful old battleship.

Thanks, Moonfish. I have a particular affection for noisy, old gear that did its job. Now if I can just remember to run spellcheck. . .

She might have been noisey underway, but I'm betting when she sounded off with those guns it sounded like the the end of the world!
