Description

A surprising end of this day! For the first time of my life I see here the mountain-glow called 'Alpenglühen'! We see this in the east, the opposite direction of where the sun has set! This phenomenon is caused by the late light of the sun reflected in the atmosphere and on the glaciers. It's a soft glow but with these weather conditions very well to be seen here in the mountains. It remains here about 30 to more than 60 minutes after sunset, depending on the weather conditions. We're back on the road and it's not too far to the car anymore. I hope you enjoyed this trip to the Gemmenalphorn, with the ibexes on the ridge. A nice warming-up for tomorrow! Enjoy your weekend! gasp I can't believe this!!!What spectacular colors, and those mountains ARE glowing!!!!!! I've never heard of this phenomenon before; it's just magnificent! Here in Kentucky we have a weather phenomenon called "Moonbow" that occurs only at Cumberland Falls (part of the area where my native American ancestors roamed), just a short drive my parents' homoe. This phenomenon occurs only one other place in the world, Zimbawbwe, Africa...at a waterfall there. Here's a link to learn more: http://www.2geton.net/martin/moonbow/page2.html Anyway, I shall definitely learn more about Alpenglen! This is a VERY special, incredibly beautiful capture! I shall stand under this glow and feel the life and energy of this place!!! It's been an incredible journey...a most special trip! Thanks! :) A+++++++ & vote!

A most wonderful picture, thank you! Reminds me of a story where I was lost and set my "compass" by the glow of the sunset in the west - drove miles in the wrong direction - it was one of these "brighter in the east" phenomena.
