Description

::: Part 33 of a series of Warbird Photos ::: Taken at over Chino, California on Saturday, December 4th, 2004. IN TRIBUTE OF 63 YEARS AGO TODAY - December 7th, 1941. Edit - Looks like I just missed the deadline per the server's time! When I first posted this, it was 10pm on December 7th still (PST) Here is another shot from the photo session with the Mitsubishi A6M5 Zero over Chino/Ontario (California). I was in a Cessna 210. What is 'The Meatball'? Well... the meatball is the old term during World War 2 that many soldiers gave the Japanese aircraft red circle (a red sun). You may hear many veterans say things like 'The first thing I spotted was the big meatball on the side of the plane.' The Zero was Japan's foremost fighter during World War 2. It provided a major challange for the United States in the Pacific Theater. Camera is a Canon Rebel EOS 300D DSLR (6mp) with a Canon 18-55mm lens. Image was reduced in size.

nice tribute. the stories i heard as a very young boy on my paper route, asked in out of the cold while they got the change together to pay me. several veterans on my route, mementos scattered about if you knew to look for them, i'd always notice and i'd always ask. strange to think of this round white haired old man shot down over germany, fighting his way back across the lines. they were always understated, humble. i couldn't complain about the weight of the papers, the ice and bitter cold or early hours when i thought of those men facing the same while risking their lives.

Ahh! The zeke. the finest Japanese aircraft of the war, one of the worlds best at the time, and still great today, though it wouldn't stand a chance against any of our modern fighters. Oh, well. Respect for age and seasoning. Great shot.

Great shot! Now if someone would post a couple of shots of its main opponent, the F6F Hellcat, or the F4U Corsair... I'd even settle for a p-38 Lightning!
