Description

Lake Waiau: This lake located on the summit platform of Mauna Kea is 13, 020 ft above sea level. Its approximately 300 feet in diameter and a maximum depth of 10 feet. It is the 3rd highest lake in the United States. Not knowing where the exact location of this lake was, I took a chance with some general directions from the security patrol. The security patrol indicated that there were no signs that said Lake Waiau but there was a small foot trail leading to the lake. When I reached that area where my trail was to be, there was snow on the ground and absolutely no foot trail. Also, I had one of two choices to make. Go down hill to where it appears to be a lake? Or go up hill? I chose up hill, ugh! The air was very thin that I had to walk at a snail pace. But with the grace of luck, I found it! It was behind a little hill and down into a little crater. It was mostly frozen. Frozen is not what I wanted but I will come back another day to revisit this lake when its not frozen. Now I'm wondering? WHO LEFT THEIR FOOT PRINTS ON LAKE WAIAU????? Aloha and thank you for viewing.

That is one big footprint....So I'm betting on Godzilla! If you do go back up there, better be heavily armed! You picked a lovely place to take full advantage of the scenery. Love the angle and compo. Well worth the trek! Amazing photo =)

Wow, quite a journey to reach this point! Thanks for making this trek...even though the lake is ice covered, it still makes a great photo! The footprint must be from the guy whose been eating those chocolate cake cinder cones. ;)
