Description

We live truly on the edge of a nature preserve that is owned and operated by our local water department, East Bay Municipal Utility District (MUD) and in the 8 years that we have lived here, I have not ventured once to explore any portion of it until this last weekend. Because of the season, I felt relatively safe from the dangers of a certain plant known as 'poison oak' which at its height in summer through fall, causing a skin rash from mild to very severe and I happen just to be one who gets it intensely. So off I went for a little walk, trekking through the underbrush of the young poison oak and hoping for the best. So we begin this week with a series of duo-tone images reflecting the study of nature, particularly the California oak tree. Since it was late afternoon and after a number of photographs, decided to return the next day and capture the morning light as in this duo-tone image 'Under a Canopy of Oak Trees'. Originally I wanted to name the photograph 'Poison Oak Meadow' as the entire area is covered with the plant in the hope of avoiding its revenge upon my skin, yet I went with the mood the image expressed and now two days later, the first signs of the skin ailment are already apparent. All I can hope for now is that the burning and constant itching are at a minimum. A quick technical note. Most of these images were exposed for their highlights and therefore appear darker than normal ,also a few words about the conversion to B&W and then creating a duo-tone. Using the auto feature of any software program to get B&W means settling for a 33.3% in each of the 3 channels. 'Channel Mixer' gives you more control, but as I have discovered to my pleasure, greater control is to be had in CYMK mode while in 'Channel Mixer'. There is more control as it also effects also the black channel. Though more difficult, it takes getting used to, but well worth every effort. Just remember to switch back to greyscale or RGB from CMYK. Have fun exploring. A special thank you for the wonderful comments on 'Looking Out at the San Francisco Bay' featuring a spectacular sky right after a rain storm last Friday. Also a thank you for all the insightful comments on the environmental reality images of 'Stapled, Nailed and Screwed' and 'Find Waldo' Thank you for stopping by Vielen dank das Sie vorbei gekommen sind Merci de votre visite Grazie Obrigado Dank u Takk De Please feel free to leave your comments in your native language Bitte f

Le choix du noir et blanc me para ici moins intessant que pour ta prente image, Egmont. Je serais curieux de la voir en couleur.

Beautiful shot. The duo tone is perfect. The place seems very quiet and friendly If you didn't said about the "poison oak" I could imagine it's an heavenly place.

The "Poison Oak" is someting completely new to me and a very interesting story. Stories like this are the interesting "side" effects of our sharred hobby photography. Most of our photo's we make out-door and it is very rewarding to explore nature at the same time, atleast that is counting for me!! I'm looiking forwards to see more of your "duo tone Oak Tree project". Henk

A sumptuous feast for the eyes. This is a lovely duotone and I thank you for sharing your CMYK technique. I have some photos that I think it will work well with. It is fascinating that a seeminly innocent forest scene could habor such evils and the dreaded POISON OAK! ;o]

poison oak? oh no no no... bad enough with the chiggers & rattlesnakes we have, hope you won't suffer too severely for your trek into the woods to bring us this wonderfully textural & dappled lit shot :]

I think that's why this photo works so well...the fact that you exposed for the highlights, and not shadows/midtones. I love contrast and brightness. So I admire this photo, brilliant compo! V =)

A super treatment of this early springtime scene and your hints about using channel mixer in CMYK are most interesting, I shall give it a try. I do hope that you don't suffer too badly for your efforts. Bravo!!

I was going to comment about the darkness before even reading. There you have it.I believe you should revisit this place more often. What I do like is where the sun lit that streak of plants across the image.

Another darker composition, in this one, you draw out the light and shadow! I can almost feel the warth in the pools of light, and the chill of the shadow. Superb!
