Wonderful composition and interesting gate location - I suspect in was installed in anticipation of unrealized plans - excellent zone representation - can hardly wait to get my hands on PS. V

did you tried to pass this gate? Sometimes you can find another world better than our, normally is so easy that noone cross it!!! Beautiful b/w shot!!! :) ciao

Lovely image. Your toning is perfect and feels right--most of the detail is way down in the dark range and I don't see any whites. It creates a nice quite mood that recalls childhood memories of afternoons spent playing in the woods. There were no fences back then where I grew up either (Virginia) and it is a shame we have to cordon off "natural" land. Though it looks nothing like it, it for some reason reminds me of the wall in the wood in the movie, The Village. :) *** Reizendes Bild.

sad stories.. yes we have freedom in my part of the country in england to roam.. certain parts are barbed wire and signed posted.. and the odd grumpy farmer.but we have an old law bill for the public right aways special areas and paths, guess wealth draws terrority and boundaries.. sighes beuaitful toned concept. and capture..:)

This is a wonderful image Egmont, a gateway in the middle of a wood apparently leading nowhere in particular and with no obvious distinction between the two sides, it is very thought provoking. Your tonal range is ideal for this scene and adds to the mysterious feel. Top marks!!

The image is also a little dark in my screen, but lavely.

Ein sches Foto mit einer besonderen Stimmung, erzeugt durch Licht und Schatten. Diese Stimmung wird durch das B&W noch verstkt. Excellent done!!!

This is reminiscent of some of the BW photography work that my father did years ago. There is so much detail here that it a study in texture and light. Beautiful work! V

interesting picture.

A beautiful POV but, in my opinion, a little too dark :)) You should rework it to add some contrast and/or light :) Anyway a beautiful subject and shot :))

Eh, well - do you know something? I get the feeling that with these years that are going by mankind is more and more stupid every day..and less human!!! What can we do? sometimes it seems that we cannot do anyhting! So, no comment! Super capture! v

I love this image. A gate to nowhere is a strange thing and a gate out there means that some one was there at some time. I do not understand fencing nature. I never will. My wife often speaks of her long walks with her Opa when she was a girl. Danke sch

Excellent capture & presentation. As usual, the image is sharp, and some detail can still be seen even in the darker areas. The tonal range shifted towards the darker end somehow sets a mood... one that I cannot put a finger on probably because this image reminds me of summers in the woods.... and its snowing like crazy where I am. But another great image!!!

Same in Hawaii. Yesterday, we never locked our car door and homes. There was no fences except for cattle ranchers. We were free to roam down to the beaches or shorelines. But those are all changing. Today, some of my old fishing areas are locked and fenced. Its all changing....Sad. Thank you for sharing. Aloha

Well, I haven't seen such kind of sign here...

Oh my goodness, is that light shining upon a 3 leaf poison oak!! Gate to the middle of nowhere is an awesome title for a fantasy land book. Your duotone image is somewhat of an illustration the way the light dances amongst the trees highlighting the gatepost. If I was walking in the woods and came across the same area, there is something about the woods beyond the gate that would tap your senses to pause and simply LISTEN. vote for the image but also for listening to your intuitions. Excellently composed, Egmont! A mysterious feel to it! The image appears a bit dark but that adds perfectly to your words and the mood. A great concept! Bravo!

Since there have been numerous comments on the darkness of the image, we need to look at several things. First the computer system. IBM monitors runat a gamma of 2.2, while Macintosh (my system) is calibrated at a setting of 1.8 gamma. Therein lies our first problem and major problem. I have tried to address this issue since I am a graphic designer by having mine set for 2.0 gamma, in the hopes that it helps others. The next major factor is not how many dots per square inch, but the distance between the dots as high end monitors have very little space inbetween the dots and are therefore also sharper. The last issue is the photograph itself. If you look at the poison oak leaves at the bottom right hand corner, it is exposed correctly. It was also hit by the scattered light directly. When making the print, I went for the poison oak leaf as it was also the brightest and I did not want burn out. Now this causes everyhting else to go darker, yet it is also a fair representation of the actual light. It was about 9:45 am and I was facing the west/north-west of the hill and the major portion of the light had not yet penetrated the thick canopy of the oak trees. Since I believe in question ones own work, I will revist the digital darkroom and see what can be achieved that I have not tried. For one thing, I now use 'Channel Mixer' in CMYK mode, which i did not with this image. The added layer of filter permits greater control with the over all seperation and conversion. I thank those who brought it to my attention.

Not too dark for me! Perfect tones and a bit mysterious!

could be right around here! :] excellent detail & contrast... my monitor is a little lighter then most i think... looks right to me... & there is dappled sunlight, heavy foilage... where i live there's a lot of cattle & trespassing is not looked highly upon because of poaching/hunting & there's plenty of other public land for people to walk... it's not as bad as Deliverance though... lol! :] hope your poison oak gets better soon
Niutek
Well, it looks just perfect on my monitor and I love the composition and the mood it has. Technically great, very beautiful shot.
