Born in Hilo, Hawaii and class of '66, I became very active in Barbells, Judo and love striking the heavy/speed bag. I've learned to Rollerblade and bike ride which is a very health sport. But time doesn't stop for anyone including for me. So my good friend Dave aka punaguy got me started in taking pictures. I'm having fun taking pictures especially hiking the mountains. I'm enjoying seeing the world thru your post on Renderosity. Mahalo and Aloha....Errol

nice work sharky. it's wonderful, dont you think, how going out with a camera makes one actually 'see' things that otherwise we wouldn't look twice at.

Excellent photo Errol!!!! Now, if you could please show us the Nene bird, I really tried when I was on Maui, but I never saw one! They're probably not easy to capture!! Keep up the outstanding work!!!!!! ;)

dtp, it does look tasty but I don't know of anyone who has eaten these berriers. There are signs posted in the volcano area to preserve these berries for our State Bird the "Nene Goose". Thank you for asking. Aloha

A lady whose name I don't remember, but she lives or did live on Iwalani St., gave me a small jar of ohelo berry jam one time. It was good too.

The Nene is endangered now? Bummer. Great shot of it's favorite food, the detail on the left leaves is awsome!

TwoPynts, Aloha Kort. In 1778 when James Cook landed in Hawaii, there were thousands of nene birds on this land. But even during that time, birds population were starting to decline. In 1957 when the nene goose became our state bird, it almost vanished. Over hunting and introducing new species to Hawaii became a problem for the natural habitat of the nene goose. New species results in new predators for the nene goose. Breeding efforts prevented the disappearance of our state bird. In 1967, the nene goose was listed as an endangered species and is protected by law. The nene goose will mingle with people and become very friendly. It became a mistake to feed them by hand. They become so tame that they will walk with the traffic of cars. As for this picture, it was one out of a 30 shots that came clear. Wind was blowing about 30 miles an hour. Ugh! lol Aloha my friend.

They look yummy, but... are these edible? Incredible how man turns wild life into a wasteland. Glad they're not extinct!
