Description

I haven't posted for some time because of computer and Internet problems, which hopefully have been fixed. This scene has the Mars Dirigible headed southward down Ophir Chasma. Ahead is Chandor Chasma, which cuts diagonally through Ophir and beyond it in the distance is Melas Chasma (that thin, dark line on the very far horizon). All these chasmas are part of the Valles Marineris canyon system. The scale is almost uncomprehensible (and no doubt considerably off in this picture too!) Here, the distance between the highest and lowest points are approximately 12 kilometers or 6 miles. You are actually looking out over about 7 degrees of Mars's surface. I'm not sure what that translates into kilometers or miles but, at the very least, its got to be a couple of hundred miles and, likely, is much more. What I've actually been doing is making a small .gif annimation, which follows the dirigible as it heads south down Ophir and crosses Chandor and then enters Melas. I've got all the frames made, but can't locate my annimation program, so far. (It may have been a casualty of the computer problems, which was a major breakdown. I'm not complaining. I came close to losing all of my art production for the entire year! We recovered about 90% of it, though.) Credits: For once, everything is done by me. However, I would be remiss if I did not point out that my "Martian Sky" was developed from one of Jonathan Allen's skies as a starting point. Terrain and its textures were created from a color photograph from the European Space Agency. Thanks for looking and for any comments yoy make. Regards, Jeremy

Well. This is really impressive. I had considered doing a Mars aircraft myself when I get around to doing a Mars surface station. And a dirigible (probably spelled wrong) was one craft I thought would be most appropriate. Really cool design and great job on the sky and terrain. Great to see an artist who's familiar with the awesome surface features of Mars. Sorry to hear about you computer problems. I don't know what I'd do if anything were to happen to my system and I had to go more than 24 hours without it. What a nightmare!
