Description
Near to the the crushed winch in my last posting "Rocky Revenge" was this amazing chain!
It was hanging from somewhere high up in this chamber in this abandoned Welsh state mine - despite my best efforts my lamp was not powerful enough to illuminate the top of the chain - and looking at the lump of rock that had crushed the winch I was not about to pull it, just in case!!
The chain was either the chain from the winch and was connected to a pulley high in the roof of the chamber or it could have been an old miners climbing chain to give them access to a higher level, there was a similar chain in a nearby chamber which I did climb up to reach an upper mine gallery.
Anyway I couldn't leave without photographing it, so decided to just try and illuminate the chain with multiple flashes, but leave it against a black background, luckily fairly easy to do as the chamber walls (like the roof) were a long way-a-way!
Your comments would be appreciated.

Interesting to note that the links are not uniform in size and shape. I never knew they were used as a climbing aid. Did they climb a little, hook themselves on, climb a little etc do you know?

In reply to escafeld - they used to wrap the chain round a leg as they went. They could also work high up on a rock face using just the chain in this way to 'stand' there while they worked! I've never understood how they did this - it must have been very painful!

Most excellent lighting and wonderful image; the rust and corrosion on this chain is well detailed and crisp! Magnificent image!
