-Honister Slate Mine-
No, this is not the 'spot-the-car' pic!!!
At the top of Honister Pass is England's only Slate Mine, quarried from around the 1750's. Unlike slate taken from quarries, Westmorland Green Slate is only now extracted from beneath the hills - from eleven miles of mine tunnels - and is entirely environmentally friendly.
"Gatesgarthdale is a classic U-shaped glaciated valley, the upper edges steep with sheer cliffs, and the lower slopes covered by vast amounts of scree to the valley floor. The rocks from which this valley has been carved are volcanic in origin. The effect of glaciation has been to expose three parallel slate veins on both sides of the valley, lying at a steep angle (30" to horizontal), known as the Quey Foot, Honister, and Yewcrag or Kimberley Veins. The slate is a volcanic ash laid down in water about 400 million years ago and then compressed, giving it a strong, fine-grained quality"
EOS 20D, 17-40L @17mm, F5.6, 1/125s, ISO 100, Hoya Super Pro1 Circular Polariser (RIP after I fell over & grabbed a barbed wire fence trying to save myself & smacked the lens on a rock....

omg steve sorry to hear about your hand ! barbed wire is an absolute menace anywhere. It is unneccesary and should be banned. The lens can be replaced at a cost and I hope the hand heals up ok. A heavy price for this wonderful shot showing the grandeur and scale of this beautiful scenery. Nice geological notes :)
aangus
The price you pay! I hope you get better quick and keep posting shots like this.

This is a favourite with me. I wish I had taken it, but what a price to pay. And the barbed wire, ouch! I've done the electric fence thing, that was cool and the splinters on the fence, now that was a bummer. Great write up by the way!

Wow, thats impressive Steve ! But had you really thought, you can go out there and just take such fascinating pictures ? It is said that you have to work for good pictures (ok, not right at all,... now you have to work for a new polariser...). Aaaargh I'm an idiot, you have the pain and I make bad jokes...Sorry !!!
