Description

- Scotland, Loch Duich, Dornie - When reaching the romantic Eilean Donan Castle in Loch Duich near Dornie I could see the tourists escape from the heavy rain. So I could take a shot without people. But I also was disappointed to get to this wonderful place and having such a bad weather again. ;o( It is the most photographed castle in Scotland. It sits on a small island, reached only by a stone bridge and is truly a picturesque setting. The wind there carries a myriad of tales of MacRaes, MacKenzies and many a warrior in its wisper. Movies: "Highlander", "Braveheart", "James Bond - Tomorrow never dies" und "Rob Roy". ****************************** History: The castle has had a rather chequered past. Originally built in 1220 by Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings, it subsequently became a stronghold of the Mackenzies of Kintail (later the Earls of Seaforth) who installed the MacRaes as hereditory keepers. Then in 1719, it was destroyed whilst acting as a garrison for Spanish troops fighting for the Jacobite cause on behalf of the 5th Earl of Seaforth. Restoration work was only started two hundred years later and not completed until 1932. ****************************** Die Urspr

Knew about Eilean Donan because I'm such a Scot-ophile! Thanks just the same for showing me a dream destination of mine. Especially the comment about tourists, is appreciated. I may be one some day but be just as nonplussed as you, come pic taking time! Beautiful shot. And by the way,no one expects to see a sunny shot of Scotland! :)

I suppose you meant "Tomorrow never dies". You're right, this is probably the most photographed castle in Scotland. I've got a dozen of shots from this place. Nice that you've got your "own" one, even if the weather was not perfect!

It matters not a jot that the weather was foul when you were there (it normally is anyway). You have taken this from a slightly differant angle than the usual 'tourist' shot and have produced one of the best shots I tink I have seen. The only thing I think may improve it s to darken down the sky on the right and give it a bit more contrast

Fine soft day for a picture, and the rain is falling straight down like. Great shot of a beautiful castle. Wonderful setting, and the rainy atmosphere is, well, somehow very appropriate. Thanks for sharing these shots with us and educating us about this great land! Wonderful as always!

Bad weather? Ahhh no, not at all. That's right the perfect weather for a place like this. Image how boring this would look like with blue sky? No Sossy, it's perfect as it is!

This castle has also appeared in a few PBS Masterpiece and Mystery series and is a most beautiful place even in a rain storm. I particularly like the litle shoppy waves and the tree listing to its side as they add such drama to this photograph.Even the blank sky adds to the emotional feel of this image. ;~)
