Description

Welcome to Urbania, a small township near the coast of Inthandonia. I started with a free model called 'Ultimate Urban #0-Alley' from the good folk at: http://www.3dmodelz.com/ which I found some time ago at Renderosity Freestuff (not sure if it's still available though). I've done a lot of remodelling and texture tweaking and added a few buildings of my own to extend the township somewhat. Thanks also to the unremembered photographer for the lightning flash. The lights took forever to set up. Each streetlight has two spots and a local, and there's an array of 8 locals around the old-style lamp plus various single and array setups in the buildings. There's also 3 infinites for overall scene light. This image is two renders merged in Photopaint, one with ground fog (which is quite dark) and one with volumetric lights on the streetlights (which is much brighter). Each render took around 8 hours on my 1400 mHz Athlon. The attractive couple sitting in the Witches' Kitchen Restaurant is non other than myself (AKA Wizard) and my good partner Nessie (AKA Harriet The Space Witch). Any comments and feedback most welcome, I'm especially interested in any input regarding the lighting.

Hi Stephen, Great image but you asked for comments on the lighting so here goes.... To my eyes the scene is a bit over lit, at night street lights make pools of light rather than light the whole street, maybe if you turned them down a bit and restricted the fall off you might get a more accurate look. One other thing... with fork lightning that close to the scene there should be a strong bluey white flash of light comming from the far end of the street with strong shadows. Hope my suggestions help mate. Steve :o)

Cheers for the comments Steve. I've consciously tried to address these points - actually it's the very light volumetric haze that makes the image so bright - Ive got the light pools and a blue infinite light from the lightning but the Volumetric haze has washed them out a little. I dabbled a little with negative lights too create some contrast but there are just too many different colours of light and my brain was starting to hurt! I think the wet look of the road also reflects more light into the scene than I'd like.

I accepted the way you did the lighting "as is" because I thought it added a slightly surreal, alternative reality quality in the image. It appeals to me very much.
