Canon EOS10D, Canon 100-400L IS lens at 400mm
ISO 200, 1/2000 second at f5.6, handheld
The great blue heron is one of the largest in the heron family, and to me seems the most majestic when it flies. This one is sitting in the top of a tree in the Everglades National Park.
Since the background was a little cluttered with trees, I got very low to the ground and shot upward at the bird. This improved the photo composition by giving it a clear blue sky for a background instead of trees that would have taken emphasis off the subject. The only problem in this shot is my flash didn't fire, so there are some shadows on the bird's face and underside.
