Description

Like yesterday, another step into nature, only this is a step back in time as well. I took this photo about 14 years ago at a botanical garden near Gainesville, FL. Shot with a Topcon SLR on 100 ISO black and white film, though I don't remember the exact type. Developed and printed it myself. Scanned it in this morning and touched it up in Photoshop. "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountian parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life!" - John Muir ----- Victoria Amazonica and Victoria Cruziana, giant water lilies with pads up to seven feet across and armored with long spines. The genus Amazonica was discovered in 1801, and named for Queen Victoria. The giant water lilies were orginally found in Equatorial Brazil along the backwaters of the Amazon River. Their huge flowers open at night, and are said to have an aroma like pineapple.

Kort, i'm always honest when i give comments. there's not a thing wrong with your photography. the lighting is incredible. i luv dark images like this. i just can't look long. i don't like this image because i'm seeing snakes curled up. please don't take offense. i adore lilies. had some on our pond that kemal and i dug and built. these don't look like lilies. they look like snakes...like a nightmare. like i said though...your photography is superb. i'm sorry i don't see the same vision. :( no hard feelings?

Nice to go back and review ones old photographic prints or negatives and find something new in them. By doing so we also can see how we have matured in our creative awareness and then there are the new tools that were not available to us at the time that we can make use of now to bring out a different interpretation to an earlier experience. Thank you for sharing Kort.

you mean you were that good already 14 years ago? :) This is a very original composition of a scene that could otherwise be a little "dull". (Can't see any snakes) ;) V

Wow... I love the division of this pic... Its a very dark base and then suddenly light appears in the upper half to show the pads... An amazing shot.. The light is incredible... Its so beautiful and somehow scary - quite symbolic in my eyes, for me... Light can be born out of darkness... Light is always on top... light can only exist with darkness... darkness is the base...? Its absolutely fascinating for me.. makes me thinking.. touches.. inspires... and this is the longest comment Ive ever given since Im landed here... ;-) Thank you...!!! This is absolutely - I can find no words... Just fantastic, find my thoughts in there, all the things Im confronted with so often... Thank you... :-)

Would that be the Kanapaha Botanical Gardens. I went there last year. They still have the Victorias.

The game of dark and light, playing in nature so well! Mountains, yes, that's home for me although we have none of them here! But how come bearing a name 'Vierbergen' meaning Four mountains, those rocky places must definitely be my home! :)
