Description
It's a weird feeling to be utterly lost in a huge shopping mall... especially the ones designed by mad architects. There are central food courts (which are easily located by smell) and kiosks arranged in absurd locations... meant to slow your pace and turn you around as you marvel at huge, carved elephants, toll-painted name plates and tiny timepieces mounted in nickel-plated locomotives. You can find Hickory Farms cheese logs, lotto booths and gourmet coffee supplies instantly.... but cruise through the Gap or Cole's Books and then stagger back out into the mall and you'll forget if you were coming or going when you decided to break your stride and browse.
You look west to Sears... and east to People's Jewellers... but your mind has become clouded by best-selling hardcovers at 35% off. You're no longer sure if you parked by the exit near Footlocker or the one next to Hallmark cards. For a panicked instant you can envision being locked into Radio Shack for the night, with a cell phone that roams but finds no signal... and then you realize that you only need to check on the "You Are Here" map with the big "X" ... located just inside each entrance and hard up against the coin-operated, vibrating massage chairs that you can't truly imagine anyone with a modicum of self-respect would use in public... and follow the colored, numbered squares to freedom.
Did you ever notice how many finger prints are smudged onto the plexiglass right on top of that "X"? I can't help but think that the crew of CSI would do well to gather a database of prints from those... at least they'd be able to distinguish a savvy shopper (no prints) from a country bumpkin like me... ;)
UF3 for fractal and background with frame and sig in PSP.
Thanks so much, you guys, for the positive feedback on my Albino Totumbird... I'm thrilled that some of you liked that one and I surely appreciate your words and your time... and thank you for having a peek at this one. :) Hugs! Helen

Very nice. The flow of the spiral is nicely contrasted with the segmentation of the background. Nice pic...

I'm not sure if I should say your blog complements the image so well, or vice versa - but I'm quite entertained by both! :)

A most alluring expression of the mall experience. It takes us through the endless boutiques to lose our bearings. Colourful interests move us every way. To return, the mauve gives us direction. This is a beautiful and source of delight, Helen!!!!

Can certainly relate to your well-written commentary on shopping malls. Whew! And you image is both fascinating and beautiful. The backdrop is such a wonderful contrast and showcases the splendid spiral design so well. Excellent work, as always!

Splendid arrangement! I most admire that background which resembles planks on a wall to me. Very well put together.

If only shopping malls were as pretty as this! Of course, you could always move to England - our 'big' ones are probably smaller than your 'small ones'!

I just sat here and had the time of my life reading your "oh so true" story of the mall... and your fractal is a perfect expression of the feeling and the map!!!! I swear...your talent may get me to try UF again...

I know that you will believe this, there was a period of my life when I couldn't go into malls for a couple of years. Just too much confusion and stimulation. Had trouble in restaurants as well, especially Chinese for some unknown reason. That was a long time ago, I love restaurants now but hate malls, even though I go in them without any problems. When I look at this map it seems that there are many places that it is pointing to. That's just the way it was, I would feel totally lost and overwhelmed, perfectly capable of believing I was in about 20 places at the same time. Love this background as well, it really as that tiled floor look going on. We have a couple of smaller big malls around here, at least within an hour, but nothing really huge. The biggest malls I was ever in were around Indianapolis. They have some real giants there! Great work on both the image and the story, don't get lost in Victoria's Secret!

Great description Helen! I'm actually thinking about those huge signs in the malls as I'm looking at your image. Then I read your description and had to laugh. My fiance always laughs at me when we're in the mall because I am always the one to walk out of a store and go back the same way I came in and not realize it for a while. I get so turned around in a mall! Love the background you used here too. :)
