Description

An approximately 14 year old portrait of my parents. They were always very encouraging and patient with my "artistic" endeavors. Thanks Mom and Dad! ;] A SLR B&W film print, developed and printed by myself. In the darkroom I sandwiched two negatives together to created the effect you see here. I couldn't quite line up the background leaves -- it is hard to control the wind -- and I rather like the effect anyway. This is another example of how copper toning warms up a black and white photo. I've had this print exposed to the air for many of those 14 years, and a discolored line has appeared around the border of the image where it was matted. I assume it results from the copper tarnishing. It is most evident along the bottom of the image and what you can't see from the scan is the shininess of it. I left it in because I feel it gives the photo more of an antique feel. Thank you for all your comments on yesterday's Negative Space photo. I really appreciate all your feedback. Have a great weekend!

A very interesting technique and effect! You say the copper is tarnishing, is it going black or do you think in time the image might turn green? I suppose it will be down to moisture in the air, rather than light?

it takes quite some time to dive into this images - especially to "find" the Janus-faces - but then it starts to talk...

Almost missed it Kort! Their holding Jupiter! There is so much in this photograph i could be talking about for the next 10-15 minutes but I want to be the first today. Most important of all, it is great to acknowledge parents who have played an important roll in the development and interests of their children. Congradulatoins to all three of you. Have a great weekend. Well, I was not first so hee goes a little more. First off, this is a great portrait of your parents. Second, the pose and double exposure shows us your artistic sensabilities and playfulness. The toning, though not being able to show I can only imagine since it does not translate due to the absence of reflective light. Finally, if I were to honestly rate this one, I would give it 10 out of 10 and a 'BIG' two thumbs up! It is very special!

  • Let me clarify that the tarnish is not your typical copper green, rather something akin to an oily sheen. It is a shame I could not scan the effect. Thanks for the comments! :) *
