Description

OK I got him again!! yippee this time a profile..! ok I did some research and I believe last time I shot this guy -I told you this owl was the western spotted owl.. he is not... my apologies he is a "Great horned owl" the spotted owl does not have the same horns or feather tuffs at the top of his head!! heres a little info about him hehe a profile of his face and a profile of the owl for ya now! The great horned owl is a very majestic and secretive bird. It lives in America in hollows of trees. It is the largest owl in America. The great horned owl is a rather tall bird. It varies in size from 18-25 inches tall and has a wing-span of 60inches. Most great horned owls are brown and white which helps when hiding in trees and branches. One of the most identifying characteristics of the great horned owl is its ear tufts which are actually feathers that come to a point on the top of its head and look like horns. That is how it got its name. Great horned owls tend to perch during the daylight hours in a protected rocky alcove or on a tree limb. They mainly hunt at night, but may hunt in daylight hours. From a quiet perch, the owl listens for sounds that betray a creature's presence. They may move about from tree to tree to get a better fix on the source of the sound. Once they pinpoint the sound, the owl silently swoops in, spreads its talons wide and pounces on its prey - known as the "perch and pounce" hunting method. Smaller prey is swallowed whole, but larger prey are torn into pieces. Great horned owls eat a wide variety of prey, both small and large but these owls are the only ones that actually eat skunks!! The great horned owl has been called the "tiger of the woods". He will fiercely defend his nest and will attack if pressed. Soft feathers allow owls to fly very quietly and swoop down on their prey with long sharp falons (claws). They lay 2 to 3 rounded white eggs. Both parents share in the nest chores and the eggs hatch at differents times as do all owls A great horned owl's voice is very much like we would expect it to be. It's a classic "hoot-owl". It has a deep voice and it calls hoo, hoo or a couple of other calls like whoOO are yoOOuuuuuuuu ???- oops uhm jokes on the last one ;o) Thanks for all your time and comments..! love ya all!! Hearts; Kimmers! :O)

Terrific photo. They are quite silent in flight. I'll never know for certain but I believe that one of these birds tried to clobber me once. I only got a glimpse of its tail as swooped past me. Too close to a nest I suppose.
