Subject: Having trouble with export .OBJ dialog in Poser 4........ HELP!!!

I have all the import/export plugins for MAX R3 from HABware. Am having trouble getting the figures to come up as arm, head, hip, etc... What exactly should I check off in the Poser 4 OBJ Export Dialog. Also, Do I export UNIVERSE and GROUND in the hierarchy dialog?

I think you need to uncheck "export obj as seperate objects" or something along thoes lines I dont have poser up at the moment. In the heirarchy uncheck the ground object as it adds the ground texture to your figure....

Don't check 'ground' unless you want the ground as part of the export. I think 'universe' just means everything in the list (it either switches everything off or everything on). In the last dialog, make sure 'weld body part seams' is unchecked if you require the bits to be separate. On the HABWare plugin, check 'multiple' to bring the bits in as separates. One thing to bare in mind: Max doesn't smooth across meshes, so you're always going to have visible seams, even if you 'remove' them in UVMapper. It can be better to bring figures into Max as one mesh, though this can make texturing difficult (especially with Victoria).

Correction: upon investigation the 'weld body part seams' appears to make no difference, so getting the bits in separately or as one depends on the correct settings being applied in the HABWare plugin.

Well smack me down and call me a loser... THANKS SO MUCH!!! I think I've got it now! Well... I'm off like a herd of turtles.

Oh, by the way, I've had no problem with it as one mesh (texturing that is). Just make sure you check all the names options in the export dialog. Import into MAX, select all, use ctrl-click on unwanted objects in group (after you ungroup). Example: I selected only those objects related to the nude texture map and made a material in the editor with said texture then added to selected and VOILA... it orked perfectly the first time. Thanks again so much for helping me. :o) > BubbaScuba

I think you misunderstand. When I say bring it in as one mesh, I mean the whole thing as a single object. When it's one object, you can't ungroup (since there's only one object, LOL). This lack of smoothing over the edges of adjoining meshes is a major limitation to bringing Poser figures into Max.

Yeah.... I get it now. I just opened the models that I saved in max format and they are all blocky! That SUCKS!!! Thid doesn't do this when imported as a single mesh? Could you explain how you textured the models when they were a single mesh?

Roshigoth ( ) posted Mon, 24 April 2000 at 8:19 PM

Don't bother importing as a single mesh.. all you have to do is import with different parts, then select them all and set them all to the same smoothing group. (I forget, but you might have to select the vertices for this.. it's been a really long time.) Check out the 3DS Max forum for more info on this.. there are already a few threads about this. Rosh
